"I recently said in another post that I tend to be wary of conspiracy theories. In this case, I think it is quite possible the video was faked. The perpetrators could have any number of reasons for doing so. As they are using it for propaganda, it…"

"This isn't about the plot or characters but I remember when I was young I always used to think WTF during the scene in Superman where he runs next to the train. The special effects were SO bad I just never understood why they included the…"

"Lol not even close to the "right" approach. A lot of new atheists are Richard Dawkins fan boys. "

Simon Mathews replied to Simon Mathews's discussion 'Do the "New Atheists" have the right approach?'
"Hi John, I agree -  I find it frustrating that the only atheist narrative that appears to be in the public eye is the "old man shaking his fist at sky-fairies" as Dawkins has been parodied. There are other atheist voices such as Alain…"

John Gibbs replied to Simon Mathews's discussion 'Do the "New Atheists" have the right approach?'
"The question for me is not whether they have the right approach (it is the right approach for them and for many readers) but is instead why aren't other approaches getting as much attention. It is inconceivable to me that there aren't…"

Do the "New Atheists" have the right approach?

By New Atheists I mean figures such as Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Lawrence Krauss and the late Christopher Hitchens. The thing that characterises these people for me is their combative and sometimes verbally aggressive style. I am in two minds about whether this approach is helpful or not as it often represents how I would wish to express my feelings about religion. At the same time, I can't help feeling this approach entrenches theists and makes them more resolute. It always reminds me of…See More

Simon Mathews replied to David Smith's discussion 'Help Think Atheist!'
"Hi David, I often wonder what people who believe in psychics think the world's reaction would be if someone could be consistently shown to have genuine psychic powers. To my mind it would generate a world-wide media furore that would far exceed…"

Simon Mathews replied to Charles J Hunsinger's discussion 'What is the value of Atheism to humanity?'
"I completely agree with you that it was not a looney idea at the time it was conceived. We have the luxury of hindsight where we can ridicule primitive tribes for explanations of things such as earthquakes and lightning in terms of the supernatural.…"

Simon Mathews replied to Unseen's discussion '9/11 never happened (not like you think it did)'
"Agreed. What annoys me about the conspiracy theories is there's always some expert involved and I have to concede that they know more about the subject area than me yet something still is fishy. No conspiracy theory (JFK, Moon landings) ever…"

Simon Mathews replied to Charles J Hunsinger's discussion 'What is the value of Atheism to humanity?'
"On your side-thought. Something does not have to exist to reject the idea of it. That's what's so great about brains. They can create all sorts of loony ideas, ripe for rejection (or in the case of deliberate fiction, to be enjoyed as…"

Simon Mathews replied to Tom Sarbeck's discussion 'What's some of the evidence that supports the thesis that the "Intelligent Designer" was beyond stupid.'
"Ha ha - I did say understand, not respect. I like the Douglas Adams quote: “All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated and well supported in logic and argument than others.”"

Simon Mathews replied to Tom Sarbeck's discussion 'What's some of the evidence that supports the thesis that the "Intelligent Designer" was beyond stupid.'
"Hi Tom, Sorry for taking your reply so seriously but perhaps I'm on my own little crusade at the moment. The reason I say this is a while ago I became a bit disillusioned with the standard atheist/theist debates as they seemed to me to quickly…"

Simon Mathews replied to Tom Sarbeck's discussion 'What's some of the evidence that supports the thesis that the "Intelligent Designer" was beyond stupid.'
"The problem with presenting arguments like this to Intelligent Design proponents is that they claim that the intelligence they are postulating is just that required to create the complexity of life. The three arguments above make a great case for…"
