Simon Mathews replied to Ole Fredrik Skjegstad's discussion 'Forced to accept grace'
"That's interesting. I'm betraying my ignorance but I didn't know that about Protestants. Sola scripture seems a tunnel-visioned, bullish approach to me. "I think much of Western atheism's objection to religion is really an…"

Simon Mathews replied to Andrew Lafont's discussion 'Church Tax Exemption?'
"I think there's a good reason why we don't tax, for example, charities as opposed to business which is that charities do work that we want done but businesses will not do because it is not profitable (enough). So for me the question…"

Simon Mathews replied to Unseen's discussion 'Where does moral responsibility come from?'
"Yeah, that doesn't sit well with me either. It's one of those many things with religion where I get what they were trying to do but it's poorly implemented. Reminds me of a lot of government policies ;-)  One of the main problems…"

Simon Mathews replied to Unseen's discussion 'Where does moral responsibility come from?'
"I hate the argument that without God people would suddenly start behaving badly either, I suppose, because they're not being watched or they no longer fear hell. I'm reminded of Penn Jillette on it. In response to people who say that God…"

Simon Mathews replied to Unseen's discussion 'Sam Harris on the Illusion of Free Will'
"But determinism isn't really any part of the argument is it? The popular notion of free will cannot exist in a deterministic universe or an indeterministic one. That's because the popular notion of free will is magic. Your argument is…"
