A big hello to all the unbelievers :) I'm new to this site- so to start off, I'd like to share some thoughts and see whether there are any other people here who have had a similar experience to me-…Continue

Tom Sarbeck replied to Sarah's discussion 'Coming to terms with reality'
"Daniel, do you know the term "god of the gap"? Xians use it. They see a gap in knowledge of evolution and put their god there. You're putting luck in the gaps. With this exception, your remark about silicon suggests that you have seen…"

"Daniel, your existence is a result of chance; it's short and brutal, and you feel lucky about the outcome? Existence and non-existence are ultimately impossible to compare, but you insist on comparing them. Sound and fury, signifying what? "

"Sarah, Well articulated & impassioned thoughts on pointlessness. Honest, too. Nice work. Here are a few personal conclusions of my own, in no meaningful order... If everything is relative, would anything exist without it's opposite? Would…"

Daniel Rockwell replied to Sarah's discussion 'Coming to terms with reality'
"I'll concede that this is perhaps a argument of semantics. "Chance" is probably the better word, and "lucky" is simply how I feel about the outcome. Yes, our existence is short and brutal, but I'm glad to have it…"

Sarah replied to Mercedes's discussion 'Why do atheists ask for so much proof to believe in God?'
"The answer to your question, Mercedes, was best articulated by Carl Sagan. Quite simply, "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence". The only point I would add, myself, is that atheists do not actually require 'so…"

About Me:
Just your average raging atheist really. Trying to stay as sane as possible in a crazy world.
Age
25-30
Why are you here?
I study Arabic at the University of London and will be spending the next year in Alexandria, Egypt as part of my course. I'd love to meet some free thinking Egyptian atheists, to get to know and maybe hang out while I'm over there.
The religion you left
Christian
Why you left your religion.
Quite simply, religion is nonsensical in every way- whether measured scientifically or within its own twisted logic... because it oppresses people, because it is holding back the progress of mankind, because it teaches us to dumb ourselves down, because it teaches that sexism, racism, homophobia and violence can be justified, because I read the Bible for what it is, and because I found Dawkins.

Aside from night/gaming/sport clubs, boat rides, swimming, fishing, some other activities, that's pretty much it for me. There hasn't been a regular atheist/skeptic meetup that I know of in Alex, but there have been a few people here and other groups on FB that are interested in such a meetup. Yes, there's more activity in Cairo regarding atheist/skeptic/cool people meetups.

Oh, are you looking forward to become an ambassador or a spook with a diplomatic cover? Sounds exciting! :~)

For me let's just say a mixture of Cyber Intelligence, Security Architecture, and a lot of weird codes on a screen.. or something like that, they don't yet have a short name for what I do I guess. Nothing exciting, but it has its perks.

You come off pretty smart, I'm sure you will manage just fine. And no, not wishful thinking, Alex always been resistant to fundamentalism. Interesting that you are taking Arabic, doing MENA studies or general linguistics?
