I don't remember ever having faith or thinking god was real. I vividly remember when I was practicing for my Bat-Mitzvah that although religion wasn't important to me, I would continue because my parent's wanted me to and because it was part of my cultural identity. I identified immediately with the term "secular Jew" when I heard it in my teens. It wasn't until my 20s that I realized that I was an atheist and didn't need any of the cultural baggage.
