Hello, everyone. I'm Derp. I have been lurking on TA for about 6 months or so and have finally decided to join in on some of the fun. My story is probably pretty typical with a few slight variations,…Continue

Derp McChuckles replied to Stephen Gunn's discussion 'FROM THE WORD OF GOD IN THE OLD TESTAMENT'
"I think I'll add a little bit to this conversation. I wonder what kind of herbs were in that valley that Ezekiel was standing in, because whatever he was smoking/consuming was giving him some crazy hallucinations. Maybe someday I will indulge…"

Derp McChuckles replied to Belle Rose's discussion 'It happened'
"Belle, After reading this, I couldn't help but think about how much it sounded like a "relapse" back into your old ways. The same way that a drug addict might instinctively go for a hit after a traumatic experience. It doesn't…"

Derp McChuckles replied to ɐuɐz ǝllǝıuɐp's discussion 'Is the universe a bubble? Let's check: Making the multiverse hypothesis testable'
"I have always disregarded the multiverse theory as false since it hasn't given valid falsification opportunity before. I think that the idea proposed is a step in the right direction and makes for the beginning of an interesting theory, but,…"

Derp McChuckles replied to Ari E. S.'s discussion 'Rant About Nothing Important'
"There are absolutes in the universe, though. Pi will ALWAYS equal 3.14159... The golden ratio will ALWAYS come out to be 1.618... These are absolutes. As Obfuskation stated (a very common conundrum), saying that there are no absolutes is an absolute…"

Derp McChuckles replied to Toby Briggs's discussion 'Christian to Atheist. My Testimony.'
"Toby, Your story is nearly identical to mine, with just a few minor changes in the details. I grew up in a very religious home. Every single person I knew was a Christian and was looked down upon for being anything less than a practicing Christian.…"

Christians, perhaps you should consider Odin worship.

"Just to point out, this picture points out a logical fallacy. Lack of evidence cannot, in itself, BE evidence. The lack of ice giants in the world cannot be proof that Odin destroyed them all. Just a thing to keep in the back of your mind when you…"

Derp McChuckles replied to Belle Rose's discussion 'Innocence'
"This is a really interesting topic, Belle. I would never make the decision to go back to innocence. Not after my experiences. I agree that it is the things that we know that haunt us, but I wouldn't give it back if I could. I think, in…"

Derp McChuckles replied to Stephen Gunn's discussion 'UNICORNS IN THE BIBLE'
"The rhinoceros unicornis, or any other species of rhinoceros never even lived in the Middle East during that period. Rhinoceroses live in Africa (all south of the Sahara Desert) and India."

"Hi, Derp! I grew up in the Mennonite/Anabaptist tradition – that’s pacifists. My grandpa served in one of those public service camps instead of going to war when he was drafted way back when. When I became an atheist, and realized Jesus…"

Your Religious Status
Atheist
About Me:
I was raised in a strict Baptist setting, joined the U.S. Air Force right out of high school to "Serve my Country", and now consider myself a Humanist and Atheist/Antitheist. I now consider the two greatest plagues of mankind to be #1 - Religion, and #2 - Nationalism. My current views as a Humanist compete with my loyalty to my commitment as an Airman and I will be glad to take off my uniform when the time comes and hang it up permanently.

Why are you here?
I enjoy reading. The conversations that I have seen on TA have me intrigued and I very often read what's new for the day. I am interested in writing, as well, and might practice by blogging some of my ideas on TA.
The religion you left
Christian
Why you left your religion.
About a year and a half ago, I began questioning the validity of the bible (KJV, only, of course, since all other translations were "wrong" according to my upbringing). This led me to question whether there actually was a god out there or not. it progressed from there to where I am today.
