Hi Ronald, nice to hear from you. You're right, it is a 'conjob'! They (the Watchtower Society leadership) persuade their members (the individual Jehovah's Witnesses, who, generally speaking, are pretty decent people) that the world is ending Any Minute Now (a message they've been consistently preaching for almost a century-and-a-half) and that god is going to start again to repopulate a cleansed earth on which everyone will live happily ever after. Literally. Forever. And JWs' mission is to save as many people as possible, because if they don't try hard enough, God will think they're 'bloodguilty' and kill them anyway.

So each JW uses their own money to buy Watchtower's books and magazines and they then trudge from house to house trying to sell eternal life to unappreciative occupants. In most countries they even give away their literature without charge, but still most people aren't interested. Though if someone kindly offers to give them some money, that has to be passed back to Watchtower. So WT often gets paid twice for their books; first by the JWs, and second, by the public. Nice work if you can get it.

There's loads more to them - and you're right, they are a dangerous cult - but that's the main scam.

Every JW, of course, works for the organisation for free; and it's a measure of WT's organisational incompetence that despite all this free labour, regular pep-talks to keep JWs handing over donations, and worldwide mass rallies every summer which are criminally lucrative, they're still having to cut back their headquarter operations for lack of funds.

Kind regards.
