Your Religious Status
Atheist
About Me:
21 year old Mexican-American leftist raver who is studied abroad in Japan.
Age
19-24
Why are you here?
I went to a Jesuit (Catholic) university and while I've been an atheist since I was 14, I got sick of answering questions filled with prejudice against non-believers in college and would like to belong to a community of like-minded free-thinkers who embrace their humanity and want to do good in the world.
The religion you left
Catholic
Why you left your religion.
I went to catechism for 2 years when I was 12 and the more I learned the more I started to doubt. I just could not accept the notion of hell and that the Catholic Church had the sole authority of the criteria for who would go there. A God worth a damn would not send good people who did not believe in him to hell. Once I abandoned the notion of heaven and hell, I also started to question the notion of God and realized it was just all a bit too convenient for us human beings and that we created him out of a need for meaning.

The Search for Meaning and Purpose

Posted on September 15, 2010 at 7:17am 2 Comments

So I think something that Atheist movement in America really lacks is an outlet or expression of what makes life beautiful or worth living.

In many ways, we can't have one big platform, because its different for every person.

For some people such as myself in my early 20s, you can really have trouble living without feeling like there is a meaning.

I know there is no "objective" meaning in life. The only meaning possible is always from a subjective point of… Continue

A Win for Science against Climate Change Denialists

http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2010/aug/30/bjorn-lomborg-climate-change-u-turn

One of the biggest Climate Change Denialists, Bjorn Lomborg, (well he wasn't a denialist per se because he admitted it was happening but he claimed there was nothing we could do about it) has changed his mind and is going to advocate that the world seriously invest billions of dollars per year to combat… Continue

Atheist Meme of the Day: Atheists aren't Vulcans

Posted on August 26, 2010 at 3:00pm 2 Comments

Today's Atheist Meme of the Day. Pass this on; or don't; or edit it as you see fit; or make up your own. Enjoy!

Atheists care about emotion, passion, intuition, and irrational impulse. We're not Vulcans, and we don't think logic and evidence are the only things that matter. We simply think that logic and evidence are the best tools we have for figuring out the real, non-subjective world. Including whether or not God exists. Pass it on: if we say it enough times to enough people, it… Continue

Sorry so long to get back. Any fan of The Doctor is off to a good start! My name has become a bit of a dated reference lately though, so it's even more obscure. :P
Glad to meet you!
