"LOL, it's OK about the name thing.  My dad's name is actually Robert Lewis Stevenson (no relation to the author, tho) & I was SUPPOSED to be a boy, thus a JR, but to my dad's dismay, I came out a girl LOL.  So instead of…"

"I also apologise, Robin, for welcoming you as "Robert" earlier on this thread!  All I can say is that I was thinking of Robert Louis Stevenson when I saw your name.  Let me try again... Hi, Robin, welcome to TA!"

"Thanks.  Emotion and tone of voice is so often lost in typed words, so yeah, it seems I did take that the wrong way.  I do apologize for that. I do take your word for it, though.  It doesn't surprise me.  Unfortunately…"

"Hi Robin, This is a tricky situation.  It does sound like you have the inlaws-to-be from hell, doesn't it?  I think it sounds really promising that your fiance doesn't want to live near them.  It seems he is not exactly…"

I saw this Advice area and thought, why not, it won't hurt to ask for some LOL!My fiance has probably got the worst possible type of family in the history of the world's families!!  Well, OK, maybe not that bad, but damn near close. His mom is a recovering addict, and I do give her kudos for getting away from the drugs and alcohol, but it has not changed her one bit in any good way.  She now has this self-righteous, holier than thou attitude that since she's a Christian she is now somehow better…See More

"Thanks all. Kim, yes, I am sure there are "militant" nonbelievers out there.  By simply acting hostile to someone of faith and being intolerant to their right to believe and worship as they want is enough in my book, and there are…"

Why you left your religion.
I grew up a Christian (Methodist), but I come from a pretty liberal upbringing. My mother is a democrat & was never forceful on believing a certain way. I grew up with church and prayer, though, and all throughout my life feared death, yet through my suffering of clinical depression and dealings with suicidal thoughts and actions, oftentimes craved it all the same. Over time I began to question more and more the belief that some spiritual creature--a creator of all things--could possibly exist, and as time went on, and I woke up the fact that it wasn't prayer or god that helped me through the darkest times in my life, but was simply MY own will to get up and go on, I realized how silly the entire religious ideology sounds. Of course I began to read and research and learn through science, and eventually everything made any belief in any such being completely obsolete. I am happier now, and I feel freer in that I no longer worry that I may not be "good enough." I have morals based on my own empathy for those less fortunate and those that suffer, and I know based on the idea that in order for society to continue, morals must JUST BE. Right and wrong need not come from a book written by men, but need to come from within one's own heart. I am no longer confined to religious indoctrination.
