Heiko Knipfelberg said… I went to aa for as long as I needed, to help me break some bad habits. It helped that I did this in NYC, God was not the primary higher power. I was atheist then and a good percentage of the other ppl there were also, (as I said this was in NYC). The higher power that was mentioned most was the power within the person, after all who is most responsible for our actions? It's not god. I picked and chose the parts of the program that were relevent to me. I did not have a sponsor. I did ask forgiveness of some people that mattered to me. I avoided the people, places, and things that were triggers. I tought about the slogans, one day at a time, I only have to get through today etc.
I've found that everywhere else, people are more religious, meaning that I attended meetings outside of NYC and it mattered not where and the higher power became god, I did not go back to those meetings. So you may have a support problem. Do what you feel you need to do, ask help from people that you believe can. You only have to get through today.
