Hi, folks, I have recently joined Think Atheist and wanted to introduce myself. I'm a professor of physics, and have been an atheist for many years now, though I was raised Christian. For a long time…Continue

What Kind of Atheist Are You?

Roman Catholic philosopher Edward Feser asks what attitudes we atheists take toward religion. Usefully, he separates out the theoretical and practical sides of religion. As far as the theoretical side - that is, the questions of religious beliefs - he sees three types of attitudes the non-religious might take:  1. Religious belief has no serious intellectual content at all.  It is and always has been little…See More

The Inflationary Universe and Fine Tuning

In the "Origin of the Universe" thread, Angelo made some claims about cosmology and fine tuning. I want to respond to those comments here, because it is a good example of how further understanding sometimes removes the need for "fine tuning." Back in the 1970s, when I was a mere undergrad, the Big Bang Model (BB) of the early universe had scored…See More

Out of the Mouths of Babes

My four-year-old is in a Christian Montessori preschool. I had concerns about this choice of school, but having met the staff and talked to them about their approach to religion, agreed to it. They don't do indoctrination; they talk about the parables of Jesus and try to draw out the kids on what they think they mean. Also, the school has a wonderful approach to conflict resolution: seeing a 10-year old boy bring a "peace rose" to a classmate almost brought tears to my eyes when I thought about…See More
