Hullo everyone! :)I was just wondering-how important do you think it is to tell people you're an atheist? I suppose I'm talking about both people you're close with and just people in general. I came…Continue
This seems to be a common problem especially in the US (Don't know if thats were you're from, I just recognize the religious belief-"pattern" from my stay there as an exchange student) that being an Atheist is like a…"
"I became atheist long ago without really ackowledging it.
For the reasons you state is why I think I have become a bit of an activist though.
I don't like religion and politics mixing, I don't like that 1 voice can be heard, but a…"
"It depends where they are asking you about. If you are in an islamic country and you tell you are atheist you could be executed lol I would not dare saying that there. In the west you should be ok more often the cases of ellen beth wachs or high…"
"I hear ya! Just today, going into Walmart, I was accosted (TWICE, going in & out) by some church people trying to raise funding for a mission trip to Brazil. Like Brazil WANTS southern baptists! :)
A woman, my age, jumped right in front of my…"
"For me it's a situational thing. I live in the bible belt and constantly have to listen to people talk about how they were 'blessed' in some situation. ("The hurricane destroyed our house, but we were blessed and…"
"I love this! I was asked once to play piano for a church ... I was offered a communion wafer and I just made a nod that said I wasn't interested. How DARE they presume I wanted their cracker! I was just there to play the…"
"I don't hide that I am an atheist, I have covered my car in stickers lately, a good "no God" sticker on the door also keeps the nutters away.
As for friends, I don't think it is a great subject, it ALWAYS starts with someone…"
"Part of what turns me off when I meet new people is the "are you a christian?" within moments of meeting. I think it is a lack of respect on their part to even ask. It is something you have to "stumble upon" in conversation.…"
"Welcome to TA Rose!
Even though I was raised agnostic/atheist, I have struggled with the same question of "exactly how open should I be about this"? For most of my life, I just didn't talk about my lack of belief, except…"
Hullo, and welcome to my gorgeous profile! In short, (Or not) I'm an 18 year old atheist-agnostic living in the sunny realm of Ontario, Canada. (Sarcasm...) Outside of my erm, non-religious life, I like reading and writing, Doctor Who, and classic rock. (My favourites are Queen and ELO!)
Why are you here?
I suppose I'm here because I want a sense of community. I grew up in both a very Christian home and in a very tight, family-like church, but only really came out as an atheist quite recently. Even then, I only told my parents, so I've got this whole band of people-best friends, family, etc.-who I've known my whole life, but have no idea that I'm not religious.
Like a lot of people have probably noticed, there's a bit of a...stigma against atheism. It's okay to be non-religious, but the moment you say the 'A' word you can feel a little bit intimidated. So that's why I'm here; I don't know anyone in the real, non-internet world who's an atheist, and I just wanted to be somewhere where I can share ideas, and hear what other people have to say.
