I am surrounded by people who feel the need to invoke "God" on a regular basis and I just want to scream at them it is a fairy tale. I also lived in China where I was exposed to cultural groups with varied belief systems. Essentially, I could no longer force myslef to believe in something I had always questioned. It felt oppressive to do so, and once I let go of that I felt a great weight lift off of me. I was free.
