¡Ay, caramba! What a strange film! This is superficially a thriller about an assassination, but the way the hitman gets the information about the hit is mysterious, as is the method of his access to and egress from the hit location. The rest of the movie is repetitive and mystifying, involving several characters who apparently deliver information through encrypted messages and Delphic monologues. So what is it all about? Well, I guess from the…See More
"I could hardly bear to watch this movie (I watched it during a skiing holiday in the Alps - poor choice of venue). From behind the sofa, it was an excruciating story of people doing mad things, getting into impossibly difficult situations and then…"
"Thank for posting Neil. Like you, I enjoy this movie very much. It is a very thoughtful, reflective movie. Well done and well acted. In spite of the angels, it really is not a theistic movie. It is about the private thoughts, hopes, and desires of…"
I can't now remember what prompted me to rent this movie, but I'm very glad I did. The central premise is not apparently very atheist-attracting, but bear with me.The movie mainly follows a few main characters as they pass through Berlin - two timeless angels, Peter Falk (playing himself as an actor shooting a war movie), a circus acrobat and an ageing poet. Through the angels, the audience is able to hear the thoughts of the other characters,…See More
"Ha, i had to look to remember WHERE you lived, wondered if it was Washington DC, so famous for their cherry trees. It is breathtaking to ever see. If you ever get the chance, get there in the spring...
There really oughta be more cherry trees,…"
"One of the things I most value about being an atheist is not having to sign up to any prescribed (or proscribed, for that matter) set of beliefs or views... apart from not believing in gods, of course. That's the only thing which connects…"
"OH i didn't mention "saint"!! It's big deal here.
I'll wish everyone a happy halloween, too, even though the original meaning of it has zero significance to me. (true, the original meaning WAS secular, but sorta got taken…"
"Jeff: You should have seen the Tropical Extravaganza at Kew Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in London, which finished last weekend. The Princess of Wales Conservatory - a huge glasshouse containing many different climate zones - was packed…"
The excellent UK blog The Freethinker has pointed out that the Church of Scientology is trying to block the showing of a movie on German TV, which is critical of the cult/church/whatever. The post explains the legal moves which are currently being made by the Scientologists to try to stifle the debate about their…See More

Why are you here?
I'm very interested in why religious people think the way they do. I also firmly believe that religions are a negative force in the world and am keen to support those who are trying to reduce its impact.

hey Neil, welcome to the community!
i wondered if you might be able to help me. the other moderators and i, and of course Morgan the community's founder, take spam very seriously. no one likes it and we want the community to be free of it. accordingly we keep a very sharp eye out for sort of red flags that tend to tip us off that someone might be a spammer.
recently, Eliana Flores joined the community, hasn't contributed anything, and has been sending friends requests shotgun-like to everyone. we, the moderators have tried to reach out to her but she hasn't answered us.
we really don't care if she's intent on simply adding friends and not contributing but we're concerned that she's sending unsolicited messages to her friends' inboxes.
and so, finally, to my point: i wondered if you could tell me if you've received any such messages. if so, what was the content; if not could you let me or any of the other moderators know if you do?
thanks so much! let me know if you have any questions. :)
