"I think it also depends on the theist.  I am not sure if there is as huge of a disconnect, but I think the focus is different.  If an atheist critiques religion in a sloppy manner, it doesn't have a huge effect.  But religion has…"

Why are you here?
I have been an atheist all of my life. I have no hatred towards those who are religious and never try to force my beliefs on anyone; I only encourage people who ask to think with an open, critical mind and to not rely on religion to make them happy or peaceful. I do not believe that religion is needed to give anyone a purpose in life. I believe that there is no real purpose, that life on Earth is probably an accident. So many find that depressing, but it is what makes me happier than anything else; we are all incredibly lucky to have this experience as human beings on this beautiful planet in this incredible universe (and perhaps more) - why is that not enough for some?

"Strange is our situation here on Earth. Each of us comes for a short visit, not knowing why, yet sometimes seeming to divine a purpose. From the standpoint of daily life, however, there is one thing we do know: that man is here for the sake of other men -- above all for those upon whose smiles and well-being our own happiness depends." - Albert Einstein
