Mith Barnes replied to Unseen's discussion 'The Problem of Omniscience'
"A scholar I respected once said that while Christians relate to God like dogs to their owners, Jews relate to him more like cats. There is, for example a Midrash (teaching story) where some Rabbis are debating a point of law. And after invoking…"

Mith Barnes replied to Unseen's discussion 'The Problem of Omniscience'
"Indeed, you are correct, and I think this is actually the most interesting part of the Problem of Omniscience; certainly from a contemporary cultural perspective. It was precisely this conundrum that let to Calvin's theology. He…"

Mith Barnes replied to umar's discussion 'New site'
"Aha! No, they are not case sensitive, but spaces matter. When entered at signup  (and displayed on the site) it's "Mith Raven" WITH a space. However, the login does not accept it with spaces. A quick line about this in the…"

"The new verification Widget also does not work on Chrome. Just FYI I will use another browser to create an account (and report on my success) but do we have tech specs on browser/platform compatibility for the new suite?"

Mith Barnes commented on Robert Karp's blog post 'Tim Minchin Curses the Pope...a lot. Debate Ensues. (UPDATED WITH BETTER VIDEO)'
"@Ed, et. al.: It works to support our cause because it gives people permission to blaspheme, it assassinates the last residues of sacrality that the pigs use to dress up as sacred cows. One of the biggest hurdles that people struggling to come out…"

"@Susan: This, exactly! The (in this case often literal) 'get-out-of-jail-free' card has let the religious establishment(s) get away with too much for too long. Sure, it's 'shock value;' but sometimes it takes a bit of shock…"

Satan- more powerful than God.

"Wow, me either! I think Schlitz, along with Pabst, another Milwaukee 'founder beer' have been relegated to the 'cheap list.' I occasionally see Pabst in oversize cans in gas station coolers next to the other 'malt…"

Profile Information

Your Religious Status
About Me:
I'm a professor of medieval studies, and I sometimes teach courses in religion as an element of culture. I live for the moments when I see a student wake up and start to ask questions about their religious beliefs. Otherwise, I'm mother to an awesome, smart, questioning, atheist kid, wife to a philosopher, and slave to two lovingly spoiled cats. I have a somewhat obsessive love for chocolate, and I collect fountain pens.
Relationship Status
Why are you here?
Discussion, getting to know what others are up to, and (sorry if this sounds arrogant) lending some advice to those questioning faith in hostile environments.
The religion you left
Was never a part of one
Why you left your religion.
I was raised largely atheist. Religion never even really came into the discussion. I was shocked when I lived on my own and people assumed I was Christian because I put up Christmas lights.... I flirted with neo-pagan/wiccan paths, mostly because I found their narratives to be rich and compelling, but ultimately decided that while potentially useful and rewarding as allegories and symbols, they are just that, not literal truth.
