I'm a professor of medieval studies, and I sometimes teach courses in religion as an element of culture. I live for the moments when I see a student wake up and start to ask questions about their religious beliefs. Otherwise, I'm mother to an awesome, smart, questioning, atheist kid, wife to a philosopher, and slave to two lovingly spoiled cats. I have a somewhat obsessive love for chocolate, and I collect fountain pens.
Why are you here?
Discussion, getting to know what others are up to, and (sorry if this sounds arrogant) lending some advice to those questioning faith in hostile environments.

Why you left your religion.
I was raised largely atheist. Religion never even really came into the discussion. I was shocked when I lived on my own and people assumed I was Christian because I put up Christmas lights.... I flirted with neo-pagan/wiccan paths, mostly because I found their narratives to be rich and compelling, but ultimately decided that while potentially useful and rewarding as allegories and symbols, they are just that, not literal truth.
