I used to think that most of the people I knew were Atheists. Life in the academy tends to be dominated by at least a superficial secularism or non-belief. Plus, most of my friends tend to be, at the least, non-believers. If they were religious they wouldn't remain my friends for long, mostly because they wouldn't be able to put up with me.
However, recently I have made the decision to be a bit more outspoken about a strong atheist position, as well as a commitment to scientific thinking and 'the values of the enlightenment.' these have turned out to be highly unpopular views. I have been very surprised to find that, when pressed, many of the people I thought were atheists actually believe in any number of nonsensical things, and insist on hedging with vague platitudes about 'higher powers' and 'things greater than ourselves.' this strikes me as bullshit. Hopefully i will encounter less of it here.
