Although I had never been a true believer, it wasn't until I began attending a private University in San Diego with mandatory chapel "worship service" attendance three-times per week that I began actively promoting atheism. ( Interesting side-note: my best friend's roommate was Tammy Fae Baker's grandson.)
A literature and philosophy major who had always been surrounded by a Christian community, I began to ask my friends and professors why they believed in God. I discovered, to my surprise, that most religious people that I know who understand rationalism and reject mythology had one reason for believing in God: "I just don't know what I would do if I didn't believe a higher entity was watching over me. It's too scary."
