The religion you left
Catholic, Was never a part of one
Why you left your religion.
"all of the above" and...

1. The rational and logical way to explain the universe doesn't include a god.

2. Logical consistency within scripture. E.g. scripture says god is good but he acts evil.

3. If heaven exists then getting there is a lottery. Which religion takes me there?

4. The sheer overwhelming amount of arbitrary data you're required to believe, holy books are thick!

5. Religions change their mind on issues.
5a. Religions fail to see that they will change their minds again in the future.

6. Failure to deal with any of the above points head on.

It seems odd how much of the above could be explained away by a religion assuming the existence of an evil God.

Notes on Nationalism

Posted on February 20, 2010 at 1:00pm 2 Comments

Notes on Nationalism is a 1945 essay by George Orwell.

Despite it's name Orwell is addressing a more general concept which can apply not only to nationalities but to any groups of people - whether it be an ethnicity, a religion, a social class, a political ideology or as a purely negative notion such as antisemitism or anti-homosexual ideologies. While the examples Orwell gives are of a post-war flavour it's easy to see how they directly transfer to today's world.

Flawed arguments...

When discussing philosophy and 'theology' why do people use arguments they know are flawed? In no other area of intellectual pursuit does this happen.

I don't read about physics and see a physicist explain:

The aether exists, all waves propagate through a medium, light is a wave and the aether is it's medium! You can't get interference if the waves aren't in… Continue

Alternative Defence of Atheism

Posted on December 24, 2009 at 11:24am 2 Comments

I have a blog? I have a blog. It appears I have a blog!

Christmas is a family time, and for some holds religious significance. A lot of atheists have theist family members and the subject of god often does make it's way into conversation. You're sometimes put in the difficult situation of defending your lack of belief politely and without causing offence, and often a direct defence of atheism isn't appropriate. The direct approach assumes the person you… Continue
