Bio

Hi everyone. My name is Melissa and I'm currently living in Western Michigan. I'm very passionate about science and research and will be beginning my PhD work (chemistry) this Fall in Bulk Heterojunction Organic Photovoltaics (plastic solar cells!). I have an eclectic mix of hobbies, including what you see in my profile picture ^_^ I love reptiles and show my own menagerie at zoos and expos in order to educate the public. Crowd favorites tend to be my Tegus, named Spock and Tuvok. Aside from that, I'm a reader, movie enthusiast, wine drinker, gamer (mostly RPGs), electronics consumer, foodie, oh... and an atheist :)Nice to meet you!

Cold is the Absence of Heat, Evil is the Absence of God

Another one of these? How many do we really have to suffer through/debunk before people start listening to facts?

Rather than type it all out (again), I made a video response. Since I can’t use plain logic to level with these people, I had to try and turn their own logic back on them. Tell me how you think it panned… Continue

Killing Religion: Should We and How

Posted on July 11, 2009 at 4:54pm 29 Comments

When we talk about relinquishing the world of religion, we should all realize that we are proclaiming war on a set of ancient ideas or thoughts, rather than groups of people. Richard Dawkins gave these sets of inheritable thoughts a name, Memes, which he defines as "a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation." These ideas, or memes, jump from host to host at such a rapid rate that it is nearly impossible to prevent or control, or even predict. The result of becoming infected by… Continue

Why Are Atheists Assholes?

Posted on July 9, 2009 at 11:30pm 14 Comments

Firstly, I’d like to say that this is a stereotype created by religious individuals/groups. Secondly, I will admit stereotypes do exist for a reason. Arrogance is the key term here. Many atheists are blamed for being arrogant, but are they really? And if they are, is their behavior understandable and even justifiable?

Arrogance is found on both sides of the spectrum; the religious and the non. If a person claims to know the truth about something, they are automatically in jeopardy of… Continue

Is Science a Religion?

"@Paul -  yea, i agree with u on most of that. but i think what she was saying was that "...we go from there..."; to mean that we move from an educated guess to a hypothesis, to empiricism and *then* to a theory. she just didn't…"

"Kir Komrik: I totally agree that a hypothesis is a bit like a guess. But a hypothesis is not a theory. We don't say: "The Germ Hypothesis" or "Darwin's Hypothesis of Natural Descent." The word "theory" and…"

Is Science a Religion?

"this is more of a Machiavellian concern, however, i think that the *perception* amongst the public is that science is very much a religion. but the way the general public sees it is more like this: when they say "religion" they really…"

"@Paul - i believe u r incorrect about her use of the term "guess". she is in fact spot on. in science we start with hypotheses which we test and verify empirically. an educated guess is often (always?) required to assemble a hypothesis. in…"

"It was great until you said that "theory is a guess." I left a comment on your blog about that.   In everyday use, theory means a guess or a hunch, something that maybe needs proof. In "science,…"

"I think Theists of all religions believe in a blind faith. But the word faith can have a kind of open ended meaning to different people. Here is a quote from Bertrand Russell I think nails it, "Where there is evidence, no one speaks of…"
