Why should we respect others' beliefs?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Joann Brady May 9, 2012. 42 Replies

I've often heard it said that we should all respect the beliefs of others, but I don't agree. Why should we respect a belief for which there is no credible evidence? Surely, all we can reasonably be…Continue

I'm new here and just wanted to introduce myself and say hello. As the title suggests, I'm a Brit, currently living in Tucson. I used to think religion was mostly harmless - until I moved to this…Continue

Lorraine replied to Unseen's discussion 'Is it okay for government to throttle free speech for social ends?'
"I could argue with you til I'm blue in the face, but since we seem to be having two totally different conversations, it seems a bit futile. So,my final thoughts: I totally agree that we should respect the individual's (who, in this…"

Lorraine replied to Unseen's discussion 'Is it okay for government to throttle free speech for social ends?'
"Is any of this just "freedom of speech"? http://equalitymatters.org/factcheck/201111010001 All of these result in real people being harmed. That's not just a political point of view. These are real people with real lives and rights…"

Lorraine replied to Unseen's discussion 'Is it okay for government to throttle free speech for social ends?'
"You seem to have missed my point. It's not the speech they're being banned for, it's their actions - at least as far as I've understood the situation. In my opinion they can say whatever they like, no matter how bigoted (in fact,…"

Lorraine replied to Unseen's discussion 'Is it okay for government to throttle free speech for social ends?'
"No. These organistions aren't just promoting a message, they're actively trying to enact legislation to take away people's rights and that should never be tolerated. As far as jobs are concerned, the absence of a chick-fil-a…"

Lorraine replied to Unseen's discussion 'Is it okay for government to throttle free speech for social ends?'
"If it were just an issue of free speech, I would agree with you, but it isn't. chick-fil-A actually funds anti-gay organisations and as such is guilty of discrimination. In this case I think the mayors of towns banning them are quite correct to…"

Wow, just wow.

"Dumbfounded indeed! I hope I never have to be treated for any sort of illness by this person. Perhaps issuing some sort of challenge may help. Something along the lines of: without using the phrase "god did it" or something similar, please…"

Lorraine replied to Unseen's discussion 'What would be a suitable punishment for the boys who bullied their bus monitor?'
"I agree that the parents are mostly to blame for allowing their kids to become little shitheads. However, what no one seems to be talking about is the school's role in all this. This poor woman is obviously in no way equipped to deal with this…"

Lorraine replied to Rich's discussion 'Teaching the difference between evolution and intelligent design to 10 year olds.'
"I would just stick to teaching them the facts about evolution. If one of them should happen to ask about intelligent design then briefly explain why there's no scientific basis for it and move on. I don't think you should make a big deal…"

Tony Perkins and Barney Franks debate gay rights

"I love the way Tony Perkins keeps saying "the evidence shows". Of course the evidence shows what you want it to show when you've made up all the "evidence"!!"

Lorraine commented on Leslie Ann's blog post 'Am I overreacting?'
"Nicely said! In fact, I may have to steal that response at some stage, if I may? I don't think you overreacted at all. In fact, I think you were very restrained and polite. Careful, though - you might start to give atheists a good name! I would…"

Joann Brady replied to Lorraine's discussion 'Why should we respect others' beliefs?'
"I think that religion should be mocked and ridiculed at every opportunity. Unfortunately, religious believers often cannot separate themselves from their beliefs, and they take it personally."

Your Religious Status
Atheist
About Me:
I was born in the UK to an English atheist father and Spanish catholic mother. Although I went to a catholic high school I was never a believer and I have to credit the school not only for not forcing religion on me, or anyone else, but also for encouraging us to question everything and think for ourselves.

Why are you here?
I'd always thought of religion as mostly harmless (in the immortal words of Douglas Adams!) until I married an American (also atheist, luckily) and moved to this country and encountered the seemingly endless stream on religious bigotry here.
The religion you left
Catholic
Why you left your religion.
Never believed any of it was true and didn't feel the necessity to pretend to.

How did you hear about Think Atheist?
Think I found the site through a blog I was reading, but really can't remember.
