Why do you think people need or practice their religion?

I am new to this website, but I want to know other peoples opinions as to why you think people need religion or practice their faith. I have my own ideas, but would be interested in hearing yours.

Noah's Ark

So I had a discussion with my childhood rabbi a week ago (I am atheist but he is cool) because I wanted to know if the Earth was flooded, and Noah could only bring his family, how did we get all the…Continue

"Interesting stories. I too was raised Jewish ( assume you were since you went to a Jewish preschool) and had the Bat Mitzvah for my family and everything else that goes with being Jewish. I enjoyed the people there and the activities, but even…"

"My story is kinda strange.  I've really never been a theist, despite being raised around religion.  My grandmother, whom I would visit nearly every other weekend, would take me to church, where there was a really young pastor who had…"

"I went to a Jewish preschool, but I was never really indoctrinated, rather, I was exposed more to the well-meaning morals of that religion than a literal interpretation of its stories. At one point, I think around the age of 11 or 12, I actually…"

Realizing There Is No God

I do not know if this question has ever been posted, but I was wondering how people came to the realization that there is no god. Was it a slow process, were you always a religious person before becoming atheist, how did you feel when you became atheist, what type of impact did it have on your life, did you start to believe in atheism and then go back and forth between believing and not believing, etc. Just interested. Not a debate, just interested in your story.

Julien replied to Laura Ann Johnson's discussion 'Why do you think people need or practice their religion?'
"This is the one I would've mentioned as well. There are other reasons too, but this one is a more popular one amongst religious people. You often hear about people that one day stop believing in a particular god but keep appearances because…"

"I even see in some of these postings on this website people bashing other people posts or bashing people who believe in god, which really bothers me. I say that some people need to believe in a religion and it works for them, so let them be.…"

Jarrod Payne replied to Laura Ann Johnson's discussion 'Why do you think people need or practice their religion?'
"I think religions came about because it filled a psychological and explanatory gap in peoples lives. Human beings have a need to feel they belong, that they are special and to tell them how the world and you cant get better than a bearded superbeing…"

"There are many reasons and some hold more than one I'm sure. Fear of death, the need to belong, weak minds (my personal favorite), etc."

"...and his theory is that after the flood Noah and his family climbed this big hill and saw other people on the other side of it and thus made other people.   How convenient. :) I bet those people would more likely have fought for that hill."

About Me:
Live in Virginia, raised Jewish but didn't get it, work as a Special Education teacher, have three dogs, one son, and one husband.

Why are you here?
I cannot believe what secular religions want to believe and ignore evolution. I believe all mainstream religions are based on myths and/or dreams, and use these stories to keep society from thinking for themselves and prevents people from taking the blame when things go wrong. I see no proof that there is a God, such as in the Holocaust. When the survivors were released, they thanked God. Didn't get it, will never get it. I believe what people call possession by the devil or anything else blamed in the devil is just plain mental illness.
The religion you left
Judaism
Why you left your religion.
Cannot get answers to real questions from the Old Testament by the rabbi and do not see praying to a deity as the answer
