Raised in a religious small town, I spent my entire childhood hiding my (at the time) agnosticism, and eventually became completely disenchanted with the destruction that theologic theory has fostered on our society. I spent several years as a firefighter and paramedic, and nothing that I saw could possibly resemble any form of "intelligent design" or higher power. I have spent the last several years carefully putting forward my ideas to friends and family, if only to offer them the opportunity to think without prejudice and with logic instead of superstition. It is still difficult to have rational conversation about theology and secular ideas with most people I know, so I am pleased to have a forum such as thinkatheist.com to have as an intellectual outlet.

Why you left your religion.
There just is not logical underpinning to organized religion other than being a moral guideline and fear-based control system. Our society is stronger than that, and we have missed out on hundreds, if not thousands of years of social progress and evolution due to the oppression of organized religion.
