Something Borrowed Review

Posted on May 9, 2011 at 1:08am 0 Comments

It is the choices not made that haunt the love lives of the characters in Something Borrowed.  The pleasantly adequate acting is no match for the formulaic plot, awkward dialogue, and strangely shallow characters that bring the maturity level of Something Borrowed down to that of a junior high school student’s love life.

Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin) is responsible, shy, and caring.  For years her best friend Darcy (Kate Hudson) has taken advantage of her.  Dex…

Book Review: The Good Atheist - That's what he/she said!

Posted on May 5, 2011 at 3:51pm 0 Comments

I bent the binding of The Good Atheist, Living a Purpose-Filled Life Without God, by Dan Barker, in hopes that I would either come out of it in some way affirmed or finally have a resource for a person struggling with the decision to let go of their faith.  When I closed the book, I felt like a sore eared member of the choir.  The majority of Barker’s book is an appeal to authority and celebrity, a mishap of astonishing proportion when speaking about, to, or for, a community that…

My Re-examination of Martin Luther King and Anti-Semitism

Posted on January 18, 2011 at 11:08pm 0 Comments

My life has presented me with no shortage of opportunities to re-evaluate my thinking, or to show me my short falls when it comes to my path of reasoning. It never comes when I think it will, nor will it present itself in a comfortable manner. My latest moment of clarity came when I asked a question of other people that I had not asked of myself in years, "Do MLK's accomplishments in the area of civil rights outshine his anti-Semitism enough we can call him a hero without shame?" It was not…

Vatican warned Irish bishops not to report abuse

Posted on January 18, 2011 at 10:56pm 0 Comments

DUBLIN – A 1997 letter from the Vatican warned Ireland's Catholic bishops not to report all suspected child-abuse cases to police — a disclosure that victims' groups described as "the smoking gun" needed to show that the church enforced a worldwide culture of covering up crimes by pedophile priests.

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole

Posted on September 25, 2010 at 1:07pm 0 Comments

When two adolescent owls are relocated, they are faced with a choice: go along with it, or do the right thing. Drawing from the great stories of yore, the animated Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole is an aesthetic wonderment that captured my attention and used the occasional depth of plot to hold me tight.

The cynical Kludd (Ryan Kwanten), his cheerful brother Soren (Jim Sturgess), and their freakishly adorable little sister Egaltine (Adreinne DeFaria) live nestled safely… Continue

LaRae, I just wanted to give you a "thanks" shout-out for recommending MeetUp.com in a post awhile back. I had previously been unsuccessful in locating any atheist groups where I live (I just moved here last summer). I found a group via MeetUp, and attended a picnic with the group this last weekend. Small group, cause its a small town; but it was really great to hang out with a group of like minded people. It really gave my wife and I some hope that we can make some friends here who aren't all fundies. So a great big thanks to you for posting that!
