Kyle Bates replied to Dr. Bob's discussion 'Which type of Atheist are you?'
"As far as one could BE a type of atheist as an identity, I don't really fit into any of these types.  Organizing atheists is like herding cats and I would imagine organizing us into rigid groups would be just as problematic. Much of what…"

Kyle Bates replied to Simon Paynton's discussion 'Jesus died for our sins'
"But this was a culture used to making sacrifices to recognize a covenant/agreement.  ("Bypasses, bypasses have got to be built!")  A covenant wouldn't be valid without the blood of something being sacrificed.  The idea…"

Kyle Bates replied to Bo Fowler's discussion 'A new argument against God?'
"I don't particularly like it.  By that I mean, I don't think it would pose any difficulty to any somewhat intelligent theist. It presumes the nature and intention of the creator god you're describing. Debating the nature of a…"

Kyle Bates replied to Simon Paynton's discussion 'Jesus died for our sins'
"That part of it was more-or-less an ad campaign to encourage conversion of those tired of the animal sacrifices required in Judaism.  Those animals were expensive and times were tough, wouldn't you want an option that didn't require…"

Kyle Bates replied to Simon Paynton's discussion 'Jesus died for our sins'
"Sorry, but that requires far more mental gymnastics to be useful. There are far better stories that illustrate what we're trying to say and we don't need this particular story to do that.  Particularly since... 1. This line of…"

Kyle Bates replied to Rick Yost's discussion 'If you don't believe in God, can you say why in a single sentence or phrase?'
"Far, far more likely we invented gods than the other way around."

Kyle Bates replied to Lita's discussion 'Former Closeted Atheist & New Arrival...with questions'
"Hi Lita, welcome to the site. The Internet is a great 'place' for atheists who live in theist-dominated areas.  Without the barriers of geography, it is really easy to find like-minded people.  I'm sure you'll…"

Kyle Bates replied to Hank Ronan's discussion 'Arguments for the existence of one or more gods.'
"So he's trying to debate with you the existence of a deity and you are, rightly, objecting to his argument based on epistemological grounds.  He is conflating his belief with knowledge. There are no useful definitions of gods that are…"

Kyle Bates commented on Keith Konecny's blog post 'would like your help....Q n A'
"1. Probably.  I don't see this any time soon. I'd say the current generation would have to be elderly and have spawned multiple generations of atheists. :) 2. Erg, no.  Positioning it like that makes it seem like that development…"

Kyle Bates replied to Jorita's discussion 'Hitler an Atheist or a Christian ?'
"That's another good point. Rather than accept that Christians can do bad things, those who argue that Hitler was an atheist are using the No True Scotsman fallacy.  "Yeah, maybe he said stuff about God, but no TRUE Christian would…"

Kyle Bates replied to Unseen's discussion 'We Do Have To Take Some Things On Faith'
"There are definitely situations when belief is superior to knowledge. I believe the real toxic scenarios are when people confuse belief with knowledge as well as the situations in which each should be applied. The example I like to use is within the…"

Kyle Bates commented on maruli marulaki's blog post 'An Interpretation Of The Myth Of Eve And Adam'

Kyle Bates commented on maruli marulaki's blog post 'An Interpretation Of The Myth Of Eve And Adam'
"Or 'instinct' isn't at all what the story is about. Why would they have "owned" the garden for it to be paradise?  That doesn't make any sense at all.  You can't praise the lack of hierarchy and then…"

Kyle Bates commented on David Conrad's blog post 'Bible Review: Genesis 1-2'
"I'd sooner assume incompetence over conspiracy though your point is well taken. Of course, when a story was written isn't necessarily when the story was conceived of.  Surely many of these stories -- or at least elements of the…"

Kyle Bates commented on David Conrad's blog post 'Bible Review: Genesis 1-2'
"There is some very interesting information here so I'd like to thank everyone who has added to the discussion. My own interest in the first couple chapters in Genesis is from a different perspective.  I see most of the OT as a diary of the…"

Why you left your religion.
I was heavily involved in my church. I was an altar boy for 9 years, a Sacristan for 5 years and towards the end I was actively being groomed for the priesthood. Fortunately, by that time I didn't really believe any of it any more. Spending so much time behind the curtain gave me quite a bit of insight into the religious experience.

These were some ideas that I came up with that broke the spell:

"We call their stories myth and ours creed."

"Supernaturalizing the human experience makes it impossible to understand and value humanity's place in the natural environment."

Straight White Male: The lowest difficulty setting there is.

Posted on May 23, 2012 at 12:56am 5 Comments

This article, Straight White Male: The lowest difficulty there is has been passed around in the Twitterverse for the past week or so.  I think it does a very good job explaining the concept of 'privilege.'  If life was a video game, being a straight white male would be the lowest difficulty setting, the easiest way to play the game with all else being equal.…

Thanks for sharing those videos! I really like him. Edward Abbey is definitely not a pacifist either and he's a beautiful writer. He's very blunt and brilliant. I know you will enjoy him!

Yes, he is worth reading! He's my favorite author and soul mate if he were still alive. Lol. But read The Monkey Wrench Gang and Desert Solitaire, then move onto others :)
Not sure about Derrick Jensen though.

I'm not familiar with Daniel Quinn. I'll have to look him up. Something in my "about me" make you think of him?
