"Yes, modern government is not a problem. And that reference is not just to the Federal Government.
You are raising a strawman by bringing in the "moral consistency" thing. The original reference was why in the U.S.A. religion still has…"
"Very well put Trisha! The fundies are and have set American society back. Their political spokespersons, starting with Ronald Reagan, portrayed the government as a "problem" and an "evil." Higher education has become unaffordable…"
"Most think the gospels are contemporary accounts (meaning they were written while Jesus was supposedly alive). Most do not know the gospels were written many years after the Jesus so-called crucifixion. Most also think that Mathew, Mark, Luke were…"
Raised in a Hindu household my search for "truth" began three decades ago. Hinduism derives it authority from the Vedas or actually from post-Vedic literature, generally referred to as Vedanta (end of Vedas). The main scriptures that comprise Vedanta are the famous Upanishads. The search for truth boils down to the search for "self" or atman. Hinduism relies on Gurus to pass on "enlightenment." My search for a guru ended in disappointments. Then the teaching was to wake up your "kundalini" the latent divine energy, which when awakened leads to a state of "Samadhi" or superconsciousness. All my sincere attempts to reach superconciousness failed. One on the Campus of Delhi University I came across a couple of Americans. To cut long story short, it was the first time I came across Christianity and the personality of Jesus Christ as described in the Gospel. The loving, gentle personality of Jesus along with the promises that I can experience the truth (for the truth shall set you free) coincided with my aspirations. I accepted Jesus Christ as my guru and became a "born again" Christian. In retrospect all that is embarrassing but at that time it all made a lot of "sense." Again to take a short cut it took me another 12 years to figure the deception of theism and my own delusions of seeing god! What saved me was my original quest for truth. I always wanted to know the truth not save my "soul."
Now I am free, god fee, religion free and a happy secular humanist.
Why are you here?
To learn and find like minded people. Secular Humanist (my preferred term) are an ineffective bunch of people. Why Churches are effective and continue to exert so much influence is not because they have knowledge or truth but because they have lot of real estate and they provide people a concrete structure for socializing.
Whereas atheists have no where to go. They meet in small rooms in public libraries and think that people want intellectual discussion. I don't think so. Sure we love a good philosophical and scientific discussion, but why have we allowed love which is a human quality to be hi-jacked by Christians?
Washington Area Secular Humanists (WASH) is a joke. They have nothing going for people like me. In fact, I do not even know anybody there personally. Yet, that is the only secular humanist organization in my area! No how bad can it get?
Hopefully, I can meet some people in my area and other areas of North America on this website.
