I grew up in a religious family (Christian). I went to church every Sunday as a child and attended summer bible camps. As I look back now though, God to me was really just a Santa Clause that the grown-ups believed in too! So it was fun.
However, just as I outgrew Santa Clause and the Easter Bunny, I outgrew god. I started by being agnostic. A friend introduced me to Taoism and I loved it, it really made sense to me; I found that sense of well-being that I use to find by clinging to the idea of god in Taoism. It really pulled me a
way from the comfort of religion and taught me to find that comfort inside myself. This is what really showed me, it’s all in my head, I AM in control. I spent several years happy in my Taoism bubble without giving religion much more though, or having the need for the label Atheist.
I am lucky to be from the Yukon, it is a very relaxed place and you don’t see a lot of religious extremist type stuff up here. However, as I become more introduced to the reality of religion I become more and more opposed. I truly believe it to be harmful, as I watch the impact it has on politics and human rights. I absolutely identify as Atheist now.
