Your Religious Status
Why are you here?
Through some painful & difficult circumstances, I very recently realized that, after almost 20 years of being an evangelical Christian, I'm actually an agnostic leaning toward atheism. I'm searching for a community of fellow free-thinkers to learn from & share ideas with--since most of my family & friends are still Christians (& have no idea what I'm going through).
The religion you left
Why you left your religion.
I've been emotionally & mentally traumatized by religion since childhood. It finally climaxed one day a couple years ago during a huge, terrible family fight (all "born again", all using God to justify their horrid behavior). Looking around, I just felt like my eyes were opened for the first time. I was actually seeing how Christianity really made no difference in my life or the lives of those I was closest to. I began to question, & question, & question some more. I then looked into my past and saw all the damaging things that had happened to me through so-called people of faith. I don't feel entirely comfortable getting into that at this time--hopefully someday. Suffice to say, however, being raised religious left scars on my heart and mind that I am now trying to heal through therapy & education. I'm still angry, but I'm struggling to come to terms with my past. I'm hoping that a community such as Think Atheist will provide information, insight, and support as I discover who I am apart from a god.

Going Full-Blown Atheist

Posted on July 3, 2013 at 10:10am 22 Comments

I'm so SO grateful to everyone who welcomed me & posted their own thoughts. I thought I might respond with another blog post because of something Sagacious Hawk mentioned in the comments:

The first time I checked out an atheist book, God is Not Great by the late and great Hitchens, from the library I went to the self check-out, held it cover side down walking out the door so no one would see it, and casually hid it in my car during the ride home. And this was about 3…

Passing Notes & First Posts (An Anxiety Ramble)

I feel like I'm passing notes in class & I'm going to get caught any minute by a very prim, very stern, & kinda scary teacher who can't wait to throw me into detention.

Or maybe, like, a fiery pit of hell. Or whatever.

This is my first blog post and the first time I'm ever publicly outing myself as a...well, you know. (I'm working up to that word).

Oh, something you should know about me--I'm a bit gutless and VERY FREAKING NERVOUS about talking about losing my…

Hi Kamela,

Since you seem to have some reservation about your atheism, I wanted to make sure you were aware that if you used your real name, your profile will turn up in a google search of your name. If you have used your real name and would prefer a pseudonym, just go to settings and edit the 'full name' field.

If you are fine with your user name as is, welcome to Think Atheist.
