J D History replied to Melchior Vulpius's discussion 'Should I Lie to Children?'
"No shit about the worms.  A student once asked me what church I went to.  I answered, "It depends on where the wedding or funeral is going to be."  I thought it was funny.  The knuckle-walking parents didn't.…"

J D History replied to Melchior Vulpius's discussion 'Should I Lie to Children?'
"Oh, Daddy.  Shame on you!  There are lots of ways to deal with other than lying to the poor defenseless kid.  I teach 7th & 8th grade social studies in one of the most backwards places in the world.  I had taught there for…"

J D History replied to Darrell Mont's discussion 'Atheist Paradox'
"This is the same "theodicy question" that has haunted monotheists since before Santa Clause died.  (Yes.  If you haven't heard, Old Saint Nick succumbed to injuries sustained in a high-speed sleigh accident.…"

J D History commented on Amy L. Cook's blog post 'Tales from a Public Library'
""How do these people not see that this is all hate speech?" You have to understand that these creatures do not subscribe to rational thought the way the rest of us do.  They are the "intellectual" antecedents of…"

J D History replied to Helen Pluckrose's discussion 'Hi, I'm Helen.'
"Hello Helen.  Madam, you have not yet begun to plumb the depths of ignorance that is not only alive here in the US, but is vibrant and seems to be growing.  Just a few choice tidbits.  "If humans evolved from apes then why are…"

J D History commented on Matthew Wood's blog post 'Portal to Another Dimension?'
"I'm sorry.  It's not in Peru.  It's not in China.  It's a silly episode from the original Star Trek.  It's from that old TV show Time Tunnel(?).  It might be from a bad movie but it doesn't…"

About Me:
I'm a history teacher with a masters' degree and I teach in the most "radically conservative" county in the entire Bible Belt. For three years running, our graduation speakers were ministers who preached christian (Yes, lower case!) sermons replete with "Amen's" from the yokels. Good people in many ways but tragically ignorant and aggressively defensive when their fantasies are challenged. I'm proud of the fact that my two kids in college always thought that religious "thinkers" of the local variety were hilariously funny.

Why you left your religion.
Although I was raised first in the Pentecostal Holiness Church, then the standard Baptist drivel, then the Episcopalian Church, a progression that mirrored the family's rise in economic and social status, I cannot remember a time when I actually swallowed the basic bull feces. The whole project is so obviously juvenile. It's a "wholy" invented product of the vast majority of humans who a)-lack the courage to face their own mortality, b)-need a dictatorial father-figure to relieve them of the responsibility of thinking, and c)-demand certainty because they are incapable of dealing with the pervasive ambiguity that is the human condition. While it is possible that there exists some sort of entity that we, in our ignorance, might call "god" (whatever the hell that word means) there is NO POSSIBILITY that such an entity(ies) could ever qualify as such under the dogma of any human religion with which I am familiar. Please! give me a break!
