"Your baggage is getting in the way of understanding what Zach meant. His unfit comment refers to the idea that they are biologically unfit because they are not passing on their genes...something that may be registered at the subconscious level. He…"
"Teens = children. My grandmother married at 14 to my 19 year old grandfather (both deceased) 100 years ago. They were married 55+ years.By today's standards she would be a child and he would be a pedophile. Got to take this "children"…"
""...to Atheism..."? Shouldn't this state, "...for atheists..."?
Temple or no, ritual an be a valuable asset to people's lives. Even as an atheist I would love to spend a year at a Buddhist or Shinto temple."
"Good job being honest, straightforward and thoughtful. I have read a few other comments here and it really shocks me that so many folks make such a production of "coming out". It made me realize how some families/people are so very…"
"I guess we could really look at this in perspective. We have had, what, 3 major extinctions in the Earth's history? Life finds a way to continue on. Even the amount of toxins we have poured out into the environment are nothing compared to what…"
"At this point in my life I have simply taken up the advice my grandfather gave me, "Don't discuss religion." Simplistic? Yes, but that advice has made my life much less stressful. I only take religion to task when it directly…"
"It is belief. Not belief in an intelligent deity that controls the universe. But a belief that we all play a role in "creation", not necessarily a predestined or ordained role by any means, but a role nonetheless.

"Agreed. I have a dear friend who was "born-again" about three years ago and we almost destroyed our friendship a few months back after getting into a week-long, heated discussion regarding what he believes about the creation of the…"
"Most folks would use the term spiritual to describe what you call "self awareness among other things". Are you sure you are choosing not to use the term spirituality because it does't sit well with you as an atheist?

I am a geography student (returned to university mid-life) with an interest in Japan, Japanese culture and language. Currently, I am studying Japanese. My wife and I will soon be hosting an exchange student from Tokyo.

So I never truly had religious beliefs, just a strong interest in how and why things work. I guess that is why I always focused on science as a way to better understand the universe.
