Wretched Saint replied to Jessica Roods's discussion 'Morality, and why atheists can be moral'
"Raping produces a greater degree of your progeny. In a purely materialist world, ultimate 'morality' is about perpetuation of the species, specifically your line of progeny. In that sense, what if I claimed rape was "good" and…"

"Who gets to declare what is "right?" In a purely material world, I have just as much a right to say killing or murdering is actually good as you to say it is bad. These terms are meaningless as they are non-material. Everything just…"

Wretched Saint replied to Jessica Roods's discussion 'Morality, and why atheists can be moral'
"But morality is an abstract non-material concept. Who gets to decide on what is "moral" and why should they be the ones to decide? If everything is material, it seems as if "is" is the only category of existence. Morality implies…"

"Jean -  it sounds like you have very strong moral views, and are very much your own boss, morally.  Apart from your Christian upbringing, who or what has influenced your moral beliefs?  Do you have a moral authority whom you refer…"

Grady Jean replied to Jessica Roods's discussion 'Morality, and why atheists can be moral'
"I feel that morality is a matter of logic. I'm sure we've all been presented presented with a theist who says "Oh, you don't believe in God? So you don't believe in heaven and hell? So if you don;t believe in Heaven and…"

"See?  This is what happens when people take the blinkers off, when they begin with not knowing, instead of thinking they already know the answer.  I think you've put your finger exactly on one of the key principles involved. …"

Pope Beanie replied to Jessica Roods's discussion 'Morality, and why atheists can be moral'
"But that is exactly where we disagree, and possibly in various ways. For example: We do take into account the suffering of the animal, and we try to minimize if not completely eliminate it (albeit not always enough). I eat less meat than I'd…"

Simon Paynton replied to Jessica Roods's discussion 'Morality, and why atheists can be moral'
"I agree that unnecessary suffering is always a bad thing.  I believe that almost everybody would agree with that statement.  How do we define "unnecessary"?  That's a good question, and surprisingly easy to answer, I…"

Pope Beanie replied to Jessica Roods's discussion 'Morality, and why atheists can be moral'

Pope Beanie replied to Jessica Roods's discussion 'Morality, and why atheists can be moral'
"I'd say that "avoiding unnecessary pain" is generally a good thing. The problem comes with any absolute, "objective" definition, when it comes to details of unusual circumstances, e.g. war. Could we ever (e.g.) trust a…"

Why you left your religion.
I ruined two bibles in my childhood. The Holy Bible used during mass, and a student bible that i spilled fruit punch on. I never respected religion and often asked my religion teachers about the loop holes in the bible. I never got a clear answer and they always told me to ask god about it. Later on after i asked god everything, i realized i would never get an answer and finally said my last prayer... it went along the lines of "don't send me to Hell because i don't believe in you anymore."
