Recently, a friend of mine invited me to the baptism of her daughter, which I politely declined to attend.  I should mention that when I was invited I did tell my friend that I do not 'celebrate'…Continue

"I can agree with that. It may just be that I take the ceremony too seriously. As you said, it does no irreparable harm. Personally I can't get past the feeling that they shouldn't be doing it and that my presence condones it in a way. But…"

"Yeah, I realized my argument may have been coming across as "go, even if you still feel the way you do about it". I was trying more for changing how people might feel about it. If they were unpersuaded, then they should not attend merely…"

"It's harder in practice than in theory...but I try to do the same.  And I have to assume they attempt the same with me, I am not immune to tactless statements either."

"Obviously baptism and genital mutilation are not equally harmful in the physical sense. I was simply illustrating that there shouldn't be an issue not to attend an event if you view the act as wrong. They way I read your argument, it felt as…"

"Ultimately, while I don't agree with you and others with the reasoning or execution, it is solely up to you (stating the obvious!).  If you really don't want to attend, then you should not.  Your feelings on the matter, right,…"

"Okay, so I have decided NOT to attend the baptism.  Thank you all for you comments, suggestions, and advice.  I personally cannot condone this ritual.  I am already a part of the day-to-day of this child's life, and I think that…"

"Absolutely!!!  And on this topic I do completely agree with everything you have said.  It's not the baptism itself I find harmful.  It's the fact that the child doesn't even have a notion of what a diety is, what…"

"I would have gone to support my friend. We all have different beliefs.  Being you want to make a stand, what difference does it make what your mom thinks. Just tell her that your sorry she doesn't get it, end of story. I think we waste a…"

"I agree wholeheartedly with Reggie. I find the comments from others about symbolic rebirth, comparisons with circumcision, all too religiously atheist. The beauty about being an atheist is that it should free you up - it is all in the name…"

"It's not just pouring water on a kid's head; it's the symbolic rebirth and most important, the beginning of their life in the church.  It's a celebration of their path towards religious indoctrination. "

"If I had been given the choice, I would have chosen against it. If I have kids (I'm 24, and I still don't know if I want kids), I will not have them circumcised. They'll know about it, of course. When they're old enough (which I…"

"Legally, children can't give their consent for much of anything.  I see your point and agree with you...up to a point.  If this were an act that caused some permanent harm, like James' point about circumcision or, and…"

"Inefficient baths are on par with genital mutilation?  Come on now, you can't have it both ways.  Besides, in most cases, circumcisions are not social events.  Baptisms are. And they are in many ways on par with…"

Why you left your religion.
The complete implausibility of ONE religion (if any) being the 'proper' one. And the fact that every religion past and present is fundamentally the same. Also, one does NOT need religion to be a good person. And I completely disagree with baptising children and taking them to church. They are not able to make these decisions on their own and are being indoctrinated by their parents who probably don't even know the basis, and actual teachings of that religion in the first place.

Also, I really just refuse to be associated with any sort of organised religion that is essentially brainwashing its followers (as that is exactly what they are!). I value free thought and the freedom to be an Atheist. My life, and the life of my children are so much better for it.

Prayer is a waste of time and energy.

I could go on and on.....
