"Contemplating the Quran" OR "The house that hate built"

I contend that they haven't faced enough and that there is nothing MORE necessary in our political climate than one honest examination of Islam "extremism".In the current political climate of religious safety from criticism it is practically impossible to protect ourselves from extremists in the world. This is because we are finding fault with all the wrong things. We…See More

These reasons are clearly from the mind of a theist. We are not atheists because we couldn't summon the willpower not to sin. Usually it is out of a complete and total lack of evidence for the god claim that incites us to atheism. The harm that faith causes and the immorality it breeds helps us in our position of course, but so do the inconsistencies in the bible and the divisive force religion has on our society.

The terrible, immoral and somehow still respected Jerry Fallwell....

Christopher Hitchens once said of Jerry Fallwell that "If he were given an enema he would fit into a matchbox"

Funny, but accurate? Was he the terrible man that many asserted yet many still loved because of his pious claims. Did people forgive his evils merely because he was a man of the cloth?

You decide...

Most of us throughout the course of our lives have heard of AA and their 12 step program. This is a highly respected organization whose mandate is to help those who can't help themselves through a powerful support system. People go there when they feel that their lives have spiraled out of control with alcohol, the courts intervene to send people there when they cross the law because of alcohol abuse, even the military will send its troubled members there. Is it an institution set up as savior… Continue

......there was the heaven and the earth. Well not really, but there was church, sleep and a little boy. You might not see at first how these three are related but I will tell you that they combined to form the first step in opening my eyes to the reality of religion. The nightmares that plagued this boy about hell and how the devil would bring his bed to hell every night came to distance him from his would be protector Jesus. Why would he let Satan bring him to hell each night, why would he… Continue

“The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.” -Richard Dawkins (The God Delusion)

In years gone by and before my faith evolved into free thought, I would have thought this statement… Continue
