Value/damage of association

What do people here feel about the value of group association? By this I mean a person defines themselves by association to a group, ie I am atheist/spiritual/Liverpool supporter/dog lover/cat lover/rationalist etc etc, the main point is these are choices I have made, not association due to natural conditions ie male/white/Irish (although nationalism is a moot point) which I had no choice in (with nationalism I could choose to align myself with another nationality).I feel that association is…See More

The golden rule

Posted on June 6, 2010 at 2:30pm 4 Comments

Came across this which stopped me in my tracks.

Generally, I think we all accept the golden rule - do onto other as you will have them do onto you - as a susinct yardstick of morality. It has popped up in upanishads, confucian sayings and buddhist writings long before the sermon on the mount, many atheist writers refer to it as a social norm which requires no religion - so I think the sentiment is universal to humanity.

But what of this quoted from Oscar Wilde…

Ian, our hope with the blogs is to generate content. The blog that you have is more or less what we call a blink link or teaser post. I can't approve those. Basically what would happen is we would become like a reddit or digg that way. If you don't feel like you have anything to add to the story, you could copy and paste the story with credit and or a link. Or you can do a short synopsis with the link added. If you can do that, we'll get that approved for ya.

If you choses the copy and paste route, highlight the text and then click the Tx to turn off the rich text. Sometimes I find that I have to do it twice. Otherwise it comes out black due to our black background and you copying black text. If I can help, let me know. It's a good story to have up!

Hi Ian. Sorry that I have not been around and responded sooner. I agree fully with what you are saying. I find it funny that the same lot that scream "MORALS" when it comes to atheism are the same ones that get stuck with the mess. I see that the Danish Police have now also clamped down on the Catholic church......

I basically went straight from Christian to Atheist. I have studied and understand the Buddhist - Atheism. It makes perfect sense however I just gave up on religion in totality. Have adopted a sense of knowing that I have to live each moment to its fullest potential. I am responsible for my actions and that I am the only one that can do anything about where I find myself in life. The things I can change I change, the things I cant I let go of as easy as that. The old saying of KISS - keep it simple stupid works for me.

BTW I see the pope and the catholic church are taking some serious knocks at the moment.

Very true what you are saying. I posted an article that touches on this (I think yesterday) on the FB group. It's from new scientist and touches on what you are saying her. Critical thinking is so important and it actually is just a mindset that I have to remind myself of constantly. I guess because I was raised to never question. (Not that they were very successful) Anyway. Have a look its very interesting.

Hey. I also found that limiting the sites you use to be better. But I have found through facebook a lot of info and discussions even just reading through links and common social networking interests (In a non theist community..) However I tend to be a bit of a confrontationist on the subject of religion and love the odd remarks left by theists there. This site is very informative. And I like the interaction on it. My kid is only 3 and 1/2 so my big test at the moment is keeping the family and schools from indoctrinating him at a very impressionable age. I do get him to make his own choices and decisions in as much as you can allow with a kid his age. Which sometimes causes havoc at creche...

Hey Ian. Find me on facebook as well have a small discussion group set up there. Chrsito Hofmann. The one with the little Kamikaze bunny as profile pic. I recently started a discussion group for atheist and agnostics (South African Atheists and Agnostics) I have a few friends that is similarly oriented as well and the road is certainly not an easy one especially not in SA.
