Hello There,
I know we’ve encountered each other before in discussions, but we’ve never really met. I’d like to introduce myself personally. Hi, my name is Misty. Welcome to the site.
I’d also like to address you on a more professional approach. I’m a moderator for T/A. Outside of discussions and debates (which I never take personally) it is my job to make sure your time here is spent in a comfortable manner for yourself and those around you. From what I’ve seen, you seem to be having a hard time settling in.
Think Atheist is first and foremost a site for Atheists to ..well.. Think! It is a community that offers support for a minority, but we also welcome debate and outside perspective. Without that, there wouldn’t be much thinking involved, right? Even within the common denominator ‘there is no supreme being’ belief, we all have very different morals, ideals and customs. Debate among non-believers is just as passionate as those with believers. Moderators try not to interfere in discussions too often, but in your case I’d like to extend a hand in helping you feel more welcome.
There is no such thing as conforming to an atheist community, but the point of the site is to socialize as well as debate, discuss and share. Making friends isn’t impossible even if you have very different beliefs. I have Christian friends on the site that are well liked as well as other types of theists. It is possible to make friends and have fun even if what you hold dear isn’t the popular school of thought. You might find your time more enjoyable on TA if a few communication skills were altered. Circular arguments, beating a dead horse and answering a question with another question (As opposed to answering the question directed to you and then posing one yourself) are all traits that will quickly get you ignored, mocked or disliked by members of the community. If these habits escalate to the point that no one enjoys your time on Think Atheist (and if that’s the case, why would you even want to be here?) then you’ll find yourself labeled a troll and banned. I’d like to step in before things go any further.
What would make you feel happier about logging on to the site? What can I do to help? Are there any specific problems you have?
I’m in the process of creating a new Debate Guidelines page. We had one before but it was lost in an account transfer. May I invite you to help me with it? What suggestions would you like to make?
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
I hope to hear from you soon,
Misty, TA
