Is free-will essential to Christianity?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Nelson Mar 13, 2012. 3 Replies

I've been told that it is my choice to "deny Jesus". But it's not. Not only can I not choose to believe something without evidence, I believe neuroscience demonstrates our perception of free will is…Continue

The utter insignificance and immorality of crucifixion

I find the concept of worshiping a human sacrifice absolutely disgusting. I'm not the only one. But when I hear Christian accounts of how they feel so humbled and saddened by Jesus' suffering, I…Continue

Nelson replied to Gretchen Becker's discussion 'Is free-will essential to Christianity?'
"Philosophers have long known that we don't have the contra-causal, libertarian free will that Christian theism assumes. Apologetics hasn't skipped a beat. God's omniscience is taken by many (the position is called Molinism) to mean…"

Martin Brannan replied to Gretchen Becker's discussion 'Is free-will essential to Christianity?'
"Most Christians appear to believe in an omniscient (all-knowing) and omnipotent (all-powerful) deity and yet claim to believe in free will. An all-knowing and all-powerful deity precludes even the illusion of free-will. If god is all-knowing, then…"

Is free-will essential to Christianity?

I've been told that it is my choice to "deny Jesus". But it's not. Not only can I not choose to believe something without evidence, I believe neuroscience demonstrates our perception of free will is just that. What would happen if Christians read Sam Harris' new book? Is a concept of free will essential to Christianity? Alternatively, wouldn't an omnipotent/ omniscient God and his plan lead to a deterministic view anyway even within the Christian perspective? This seems to be another nail in…See More

The utter insignificance and immorality of crucifixion

I find the concept of worshiping a human sacrifice absolutely disgusting. I'm not the only one. But when I hear Christian accounts of how they feel so humbled and saddened by Jesus' suffering, I can't help to point out that one person suffering eternal torment is by definition infinitely worse than a few days on the cross. Let alone billions of people currently suffering in this way under their world view for crimes they did not commit. They were simply born. The best answer Christians have…See More

Dylan Sloboda replied to Gretchen Becker's discussion 'Religious Addiction'
"I wouldn't describe it as addiction. With the detachment from reality, it would seem more like some variety of schizophrenia. The DSM was largely written by drug lobbies. Many of the definitions are intentionally vague to encompass as broad a…"

Religious Addiction

The topic of Religious Addiction is debatable and not well understood, however my father was diagnosed with a stage of religious addiction. It took my family almost a year to find someone who would consider the possibility that he actually was addicted to the book of Revelation, end-time prophecy, and a literal interpretation to the Bible. Here is one online source that describes the common symptoms of religious addiction:…See More

How I remembered for sure that I was always an atheist.

Posted on September 5, 2011 at 1:15am 15 Comments

So I was thinking back to the time when I found a small pink envelope in my mom's closet with the words Tooth Fairy written on the front. It contained some of my baby teeth. Immediately, I realized the truth about the Tooth Fairy.

Ten minutes later I connected the dots with all "magical" beings I had believed in, inlcuding Santa. After this revelation I ran to tell my sister that none of it could be true (unfortunately, while I was 6 she was only 4 and I may have ruined it…

Thanks for the add! It's reassuring to know that I'm not the only one who feels lonely as an atheist at times (especially since I'm in the South). I'm grateful for sites like this where I can interact with other freethinkers and secularists.
