(This is my first posting here, and actually the first time I have ever spoken with other atheists. I'm rather relieved about the fact that I am not alone...I will definitely be very active in this…Continue
"I personally think you should finish up your schooling, and get your degree. It's not easy to find work without one nowadays. Jump through whatever hoops you've got to while you're there. After that, use whatever credits you can to…"
"Hey, I went to Gordon in the 80's. It only took me 20 years to leave religion behind me. I wouldn't worry about being an atheist there. I knew a couple that were out when I was there. Odd, yes, for their choice of school, but I don't…"
"Gordon, eh? You don't happen to know Dana Ramsey do you? I went to high school with her!
I know I am a few days late to help you out with this dilemma and I hope it all went well, but if you ever want to organize an Eastern MA meetup let me…"
"Well said, I remember Dawkins in "The God Delusion" made a similar comparison to Ketamine.
NDEs are just another example of religious people automatically attributing anything they don't understand to their faith. Instead of seeking…"
"Thanks. I'm worried about not being accepted by employers as well. Grad school would definitely solve that problem, if only I could figure out what to go for.
Congrats on surviving a Christian college, regardless of how 'open to…"
"Surprisingly the college has never offered this theory in one of our many science and faith lectures.
Not surprising to me! :-)
I went to a Christian university, but they were far more open to rebellion that yours appears to be. I'm stuck…"
"If you want some help debating your Christian family, PM me and I’ll share some points I have learned from my Christian school debates. For one, you need to put them more on the defensive and asking questions they can’t easily answer.…"
"I appreciate you making me think of my parents' loins for a brief moment:P
In response to the last comment, it made me think of a point Dawkins made in 'The God Delusion' (I only remember it clearly because I finished it today). At…"
Without first putting my faith in doubt and considering the rationality of my beliefs, I went to a Christian college where I am very much alone by being an atheist. I came to this site to confide in others and be surrounded by other freethinkers who also believe religion is a weakness and not a strength.
The religion you left
Why you left your religion.
I had a time several years ago where I was doubting Christianity. I couldn't explain away the inconsistencies and problems I found, but I also couldn't make the leap to leave Christianity yet. I eventually made the transition by pretending I had no beliefs and doubting everything. I decided I would believe whatever I could rationalize, and I never could rationalize any faith without evidence and the Christian beliefs I previously held. Long story short, I became a deist for awhile. With the help of Dawkins and others, I eventually became an atheist as I understand that the existence of god is not even a rational or necessary belief.
