Gallup's Mirror replied to Charles J Hunsinger's discussion 'What is the value of Atheism to humanity?'
"This is absurd. If atheism is religion, "off" is a television channel, health is a disease, abstinence is a sex position, and baldness is a hair color."

Gallup's Mirror replied to Charles J Hunsinger's discussion 'What is the value of Atheism to humanity?'
"Sure. One may believe God exists (theism) while admitting no way to be certain (agnosticism). Likewise, one may not believe God exists (atheism) while admitting no way to be certain (agnosticism). Agnostic atheism is the stance of the world's…"

This describes my atheism: God is unproved, not disproved.

Crackpot: God exists!
Me: Evidence, please.
Crackpot: There is none.
Me: I don't believe you.

That's it. That's all it is. The rest is just the crackpot employing some bit of dishonesty to obfuscate or deny it.

He'll shift the burden of evidence onto me. ("Prove God doesn't exist!").
He'll claim to have evidence when he does not. ("Lookee here! Purely abstract mathematics! That's evidence!").
He'll say he doesn't need evidence. ("God is too big for evidence!")
He'll completely ignore the request for evidence and won't respond at all. (This is very popular.)
He'll restate the request for evidence as an accusation or insult. ("You hate God!" "How dare you question my faith!")
He'll pin God to ignorance. ("You can't explain X so God is the only explanation!")
And on and on and on. Anything but evidence.

There is no case to be made for the existence of God. There is nothing to debate, nothing to consider: no evidence, no data, not a shred of the scientific whatsoever. The rest is just the outraged caterwauling of the crackpot, desperately insisting that any such "debate" over God exists at all.

That is why I am an atheist.

2016 Presidential Election: Who do you think will run?

Posted on February 26, 2014 at 7:30pm 18 Comments

The New York Times published the results of a poll today in which 64% of all American adults said they would like to see Hillary Clinton run for President in 2016. Among independent voters, 52% would like to see Clinton run. These percentages are nearly double those for the most-preferred Republicans; Ron Paul, Jeb Bush, and Chris Christie. Clinton…

Happy March Equinox

Posted on March 20, 2013 at 12:00am 2 Comments

Today, March 20, 2013, the day and night will be of equal length, an event which is the Vernal Equinox in the northern hemisphere and the Autumnal Equinox in the southern hemisphere. For some reason, Christians like to celebrate this as the time Jesus rose from the dead, hungering for the flesh of the living, and longing to paint chicken eggs with vinegar dye. Or something like that. Anyway, enjoy it. It only happens twice every year. The equinox I mean, not the zombie…

Hi Gallup's Mirror,

I am following up on an issue reported to me as a moderator regarding the 'Fawn in a field on Summer Solstice' image. A user reported that their computer crashed and started back up while viewing that image -- oddly enough -- around the time you posted the following comment: "Hmmm. Joke crash. Joke reboot required."

I am double checking to see if your comment was strictly a reference to a joke not being received properly, or if you also experienced computer issues while viewing the image.

It seems highly unlikely that the image is relevant to that user's computer crashing, but I am compelled to check if it wasn't an isolated case.

Thanks,

Kris
