Sometimes you hear about murderers being sentenced to hundreds or more years imprisonment for their crimes. As far as I understand, this is done so that factors that would lower the sentence are…Continue

Funny thing happened to me today (not that funny, but I have to start somewhere).I had bought some comic books and was cycling home when the bag fell from my bike (stupid weakened binders), spilling…Continue

Freek commented on Nerdy Keith's blog post 'Northern Irish Bakery Refuses to Bake Pro Gay Cake'
"@Davis they didn't refuse service to the LGBT people, they refused to bake a cake according to a specific theme. But that, in itself, is not discrimination. @Nerdy I'm curious how the law works on companies backtracking on orders they…"

Freek commented on Nerdy Keith's blog post 'Northern Irish Bakery Refuses to Bake Pro Gay Cake'
"I'm not sure if this falls under discrimination law. That would only be the case if the bakery refused to service a gay person at all. However, that is not what they seem to refuse. Instead, they refuse to make certain creations (cakes) that…"

Freek replied to John Major's discussion 'Humanzee!!'
"Michael Crichton wrote an interesting book on it: "Next". I think a lot of the human perception of intelligence sits in a person's ability to speak comprehensively. I doubt that many people will see a humanzee as anything different…"

Freek replied to Belle Rose's discussion 'Is rape an evolved mating adaptation?'
"Rape being a mating strategy seems fairly logical in an evolutionary sense; males who did it had a good chance to spread their genes more than males who didn't. However, evolution has never been shy to use the same item for multiple purposes.…"

Freek replied to Hassan Ghanem's discussion 'enjoy lots of girls or love one girl?' in the group Single Atheists
"I don't think being an Atheist has much influnece on that choice (although it has the advantage of not having dogmatic restrictions regarding relationships). Either way of life has its appeals and drawbacks, and there are many combinations…"

Freek replied to Belle Rose's discussion 'Wife, girlfriend, mistress, daughter.....'
"From what you're saying, it sounds like if you do you job well (meet the requirements, don't slack and rely on others), you colleagues will see you as a valiable co-worker first. Beyond that I think you can be yourself without falling…"

Freek replied to Belle Rose's discussion 'Wife, girlfriend, mistress, daughter.....'
"While men make a snapshot decision on wether they "would do her if they could", most men don't become a stalker (to exaggerate the point) when they categorize a woman as such. As far as I've seen, while we (men) do turn up the…"

Freek replied to Belle Rose's discussion 'Wife, girlfriend, mistress, daughter.....'
"I work in engineering and consultancy, a technical branch that is still primarily a male environment, although more women enter the field every year. As a guy (and stricktly speaking for myself) I seem to automatically categorize women I meet by…"

Freek replied to Belle Rose's discussion 'This is not a test...'
"Multiple Choice tests can look for your ability to quickly recognize a correct answer out of a set of (somewhat) incorrect answers, without you having to work out the complete answer. The disadvantage is that such a test says nothing about the way…"

Freek replied to Drew Detamore's discussion 'How To Tell My Parents I Am Athiest?'
"I went through a fairly similar thing with my parents. I started by expressing my doubts and questions about the bible to my parents, and then (partly on their advise) also to the pastor. The pastor didn't help too much. We fairly soon realized…"

Freek replied to Unseen's discussion 'If in killing a woman her unborn baby is killed as well...'
"To me, the essence of Pro-choice is that it is the pregnant woman who has the right of choice, and no-one else (they can advise, but that's it). From that standpoint, killing a pregnant woman (and the unborn fetus) should count as a double…"

Freek replied to Unseen's discussion 'Why isn't a 14 year old girl old enough to consent to sex?'
"And then you have someone of, say 40, starting a relation with a 9 year old. Both consent. Should the law butt out of that too? The law has to draw a line at some age after which it will no longer look at a sexual relation as illegal by default. The…"

Freek replied to Unseen's discussion 'Why isn't a 14 year old girl old enough to consent to sex?'
"@Unseen That's what I was saying; the net effect is the same. But if the government doesn't draw the line at 18, it has to draw the line at a different age, resulting in the same argument."

Freek replied to Unseen's discussion 'Why isn't a 14 year old girl old enough to consent to sex?'
"Wouldn't that mean that her parents could prevent the abortion just by vetoing it? Or, the other way around, wouldn't that mean that the parents can force her into an abortion?"

Freek replied to Unseen's discussion 'Why isn't a 14 year old girl old enough to consent to sex?'
"But it's the other way around, right? We take away the ownership from the adult party by making it illegal for them to have sex with minors. Granted, the net result is the same, but I don't really see a way around that without giving the…"

Your Religious Status
Atheist, Secular/Nonreligious/Agnostic
About Me:
I'm a christian on the last possible brink of christianity and believing. And since I've recently went through the Thoraic scripture again, I don't think I really want to praise such a god either.
On a more positive note, I've recently graduated on Chemical Engineering and I'm enjoying a bit of free time until I have a job.
Update: status changed to atheist.
Age
25-30
Why are you here?
As mentioned in the 'About me': It's not even much of a contest anymore, but I would like to be able to talk with some people in the same predicament (most of my friends are fully believing christians).
