Sometimes you hear about murderers being sentenced to hundreds or more years imprisonment for their crimes. As far as I understand, this is done so that factors that would lower the sentence are…Continue

Funny thing happened to me today (not that funny, but I have to start somewhere).I had bought some comic books and was cycling home when the bag fell from my bike (stupid weakened binders), spilling…Continue

Freek replied to Logicallunatic's discussion '"It's not Adam and Steve, it's Adam and Eve"'
"The best reply I saw to that one was another picketer holding up a sign saying: "Lot fucked his daughters, not his sons." On Topic, for me it's the made-up stories that are endlessly parotted, such as the teacher who said that if God…"

Freek replied to Unseen's discussion 'Actually, violence does solve things'
"Isn't Martin Luther King's quote not more aimed against the effect of violence on root causes? Violende indeed has a decent track record of handling with and solving threats. However, has violence ever resolved the need for more…"

Freek replied to Unseen's discussion 'Property is theft. If it isn't, how?'
"This is not about justifying property (or slavery, taking the analogue), this is about defining things for what they are. Equating apropriation to theft, or slavery to murder generalizes the terms and depowers them overal. The impact of…"

Freek replied to Unseen's discussion 'Property is theft. If it isn't, how?'
"The world may have been available for everyone to use, but it wasn't owned by anyone of anything. So while availability was denied to some (or most) when property arose, nothing was taken from anyone (i.e. Stolen). Therefore theft is not the…"

Freek replied to Belle Rose's discussion 'The Last Man - A debate about environmental ethics'
"Morality, to my understanding, is a social construct. In the scenario that you describe either there is no longer a society (one person remains), or the last man is society. If the first, morality stopped existing when society did, so what he does…"

Freek replied to Alex Decesare's discussion 'should I worry about my parents kicking me out because of my atheism'
"In the end, it doesn't matter how religious your parents are, but what kind of people they are. If they are loving and understanding, just explain your doubts and have a serious conversation with them on why you don't believe. Don't…"

Freek replied to Belle Rose's discussion 'What should we do about women terrorists?'
"@Belle, I agree that a worldwide version of VAWA can be helpful. However, in many Islamic countries, domestic abuse is much more of a family affair than it is in most western countries, meaning that it is much harder to break women out of an abusive…"

Freek replied to Belle Rose's discussion 'What should we do about women terrorists?'
"How do you envision helping them? As you mentioned, organisations like VAWA already exist, but even those largely depend on the fact that women (and children) come to them seeking help. I assume that Muslim women would receive the same help if they…"

Freek replied to Belle Rose's discussion 'What should we do about women terrorists?'
"On that matter, what about children walking into a building with a bomb stapped to them? I think it is important that every captured terrorist, regardless of gender or age, should be shielded from influences from whomever set them up for it. After…"

Freek replied to _Robert_'s discussion 'Why do living things strive to continue?'
"This sounds a bit like throwing down a thousand six-sides dice, picking up the ones that fall on six, repeat the process with those a couple of times and then wonder whether the remaining dice are motivated to fall on six. Life that survives gets…"

Freek replied to Belle Rose's discussion 'The single biggest domestic threat to public safety in the United States....'
"I agree with you about the tribal needs, but I was more aiming more at the concept of tribal warfare; even if your 'tribe' provides you with sufficient shelter, food, and company, if you don't fully trust them to fight for your cause…"

Freek replied to Belle Rose's discussion 'The single biggest domestic threat to public safety in the United States....'
"But isn't that again two sides of the same coin? Religion gains its power from the tribal human nature; our sense of belonging to something. Similarly, gangs work in an identical fashion. And the use of religious symbols only helps…"

Freek replied to Belle Rose's discussion 'The single biggest domestic threat to public safety in the United States....'
"Gangs and terrorists are essentially the same; do whatever you gang wants you to do and threaten or attack anyone who doesn't comply or (fearfully) respect your gang. Even the wa of recruiting works the same. The only difference is in scale. I…"

Freek replied to Simon Mathews's discussion 'Should drinking to excess during pregnancy be a crime?'
"This is a double-edged sword, as any claims towards poisoning (of a fetus) will strengthen the case against abortion; if it is illegal to poison them, it will certainly be illegal to outright destroy them. I assume that thr pro-life movement will…"

Freek commented on _Robert_'s blog post 'PI = 4'
"As long as you keep zooming in into the circle, you will see that the corners don't turn into a line (as the picture suggests), so in essence this picture is still the same as in the 3rd and 4th panel. While the method above is unsuitable for…"

Your Religious Status
Atheist, Secular/Nonreligious/Agnostic
About Me:
I'm a christian on the last possible brink of christianity and believing. And since I've recently went through the Thoraic scripture again, I don't think I really want to praise such a god either.
On a more positive note, I've recently graduated on Chemical Engineering and I'm enjoying a bit of free time until I have a job.
Update: status changed to atheist.
Why are you here?
As mentioned in the 'About me': It's not even much of a contest anymore, but I would like to be able to talk with some people in the same predicament (most of my friends are fully believing christians).
