Erik Elison replied to Scott D.'s discussion 'Anyone listen to music that expresses their views on religion?'
"Music is my religion so yes all the time, 30 seconds is an amazing band but there are so many other great bands, Green Day, Rush, Tool, Godsmack, Mudvayne, then if you really want anti religious you've got black metal foreign and domestic as…"

Ungodly Discipline AC360

Nothing and I mean nothing gets my blood boiling more than religious corporal punishment. I caught another installment of Anderson Coopers Ungodly Discipline segment on TV, I then watched more on youtube and learned about The Independent Fundamentalist Baptists or IFB. After listening to the stories from 'survivors' told and hearing about those who did not survive their godly punishment. After my initial rage I thought this: Why in America are these religious institutions or cults given so much…See More

Erik Elison replied to Unseen's discussion 'What do you dislike about Mitt Romney?'
"First off, great question, the absolute number 1 reason i hate Mitt Romney is that he is a pathological liar. A man who lies about his own first name cannot and should not be trusted in any situation. I am an ex-mormon as well, so i have insight…"

Erik Elison replied to Adam's discussion 'Rapture. An Atheist's View.'
"I just watched a documentary called "Waiting for Armageddon" 3 filmmakers follow a group of fundies to Israel. Yes these people believe we are in the early stages of the end times right  now. The most interesting thing said in the…"

Erik Elison replied to scLovely's discussion 'Are you more of a cat person or a dog person?'
"Definitely a dog person I can tolerate cats and am nice to them but would never own one myself. Matter of fact I am waiting anxiously to adopt my niece's dog when she graduates for High School."

Erik Elison replied to Jason's discussion 'The Christian Right and their god'
"I agree this aspect of the religious to me is the most troubling of their traits. To express such a desire for nearly absolute freedom only to give it away to a supposed supernatural deity is just straight up insanity. It clearly states in the bible…"

Allen J. Thoma commented on Erik Elison's blog post 'Agora the story of Hypatia'
"I also enjoyed the movie, although it is not 100% historically accurate (what movie ever is?). Carl Sagen many years ago profiled Hypatia in his program "Cosmos", which is worth watching. Hypatia was not quite the visionary astronomer that…"

Agora the story of Hypatia

I just watched Agora a film by Alejandro Amenábar. This is a beautiful film with a message that I think many on this site will relate too. I knew nothing of Hypatia for some reason she has been almost erased from contemporary history. Agora is about philosophy, astronomy, religion but mostly its about us as a species. It asks how the hows and the whys and is as I have said a beautiful tale - a tragic tale but also a tale of the triumph of reason. This film should be a must see for everyone…See More

No Religion in the UFC

"This is the best video I have seen in a long time. Way to go Joe. Although there are quite a few fighters who thank god, it happens a lot actually despite what Joe was trying to infer. I am a huge UFC fan, but don't like all the 'glory to…"

Erik Elison replied to Morgan Matthew's discussion 'Obama administration has joined a U.N. effort to restrict religious speech.'
"This is an Orwellian slap in the face to free speech. Its getting harder and harder to continue to defend Obama and his policies on just about every major important issue we face."

Dave G commented on Erik Elison's blog post 'Dawkins latest on the Creationists invasion of the classroom'

About Me:
I was raised in the LDS 'Mormon' church and left 6 years ago at the age of 26, I met a spiritual leader of a (Non-Christian religious) fellowship which opened my mind to other possibilities, which led to then question even more. I attended the fellowship once and a while and liked its concept of what and who God is but could never bring myself to join. This of course led to further doubt, does God or a God exist? I don't know and am tired of pretending that I do know God exists. This is why I now have no God and am totally free to follow whatever philosophy suites me.

Why are you here?
I'm here because I think this is a cool site that might have a lot to offer for people like myself, who either were never religious or got fed and left like I did. I also think site might be a great place to meet others who feel the same as I do about religion.
The religion you left
Mormonism
Why you left your religion.
I left the religion of my family after a careful and thought out process of realizing that religion is bull. I even briefly wast attracted to a very kind man who claimed that he met god, although I admire and respect what this man teaches I could not accept the idea of belonging to just another religion. A member and friend told the best line about religion I have ever heard and that is this:Religion is 2 things first it is a man-made theological construct and second it is a tool in which to control human behavior often through fear.

Dawkins latest on the Creationists invasion of the classroom

Just found this little gem and wanted to pass it along, I especially like the title the article.

My only comment is that how sad its going to be in say 100 years when all the remnants of our achievements no longer exist and whats left of the human race has reverted back to cave man and cave women because of this unyielding urge by the religious to excise all and any… Continue

The White Shirt Gestapo

Posted on July 12, 2009 at 10:54pm 5 Comments

It seems that on at least a monthly basis my feelings about and my decision to leave the Mormon church are re-affirmed. Last night I read that a gay couple were detained by LD$ Inc. security while the cops were cops were brought in for walking on church grounds or by church grounds and kissing on the cheek. I went to the Salt Lake Tribune to check this story out further it was there and already has more than 1,000 comments. I liked the one best about how right after a couple gets "sealed"… Continue
