I agree that science, is subject to the scientific method. What I fear is the time when, "scientist say eating shit is healthy - so EAT SHIT". Hyperbole, I know, but how much contradicting research have you read?
There's a book by Neal Stephenson titled, Anathem. It's based in a world where "scientists, philosophers and mathematicians—a religious order unto themselves—have been cloistered behind concent (convent) walls. Their role is to nurture all knowledge while safeguarding it from the vagaries of the irrational secular outside world."
It's all fiction, I know; ridiculous, perhaps; fun to think about, definitely!
