Why are you here?
I enjoy the camaraderie. Plus, I read a lot about subjects that interest my fellow freethinkers and if I can help answer questions and/or provide reading suggestions so that they may have their questions answered then I'm glad to be able to do that. I think this place is important to people when it comes to feeling like they're not alone. It's a bastion of sanity and rationality in the sea of nonsense they find in their day to day lives. Insofar as it is that, I want to foster it and protect it to make sure it continues to be here for them, now and in the future.
The religion you left
Was never a part of one
Why you left your religion.
I was never a part of one. My mother is a non-practicing Episcopalian (who seems to be of the variety that Daniel Dennet would describe as "believing in belief") while my step-father is a non-practicing Reformed "Secular Jew"- while honoring Jewish traditions he wouldn't profess to believe in God. As such, I was never indoctrinated and, to their never ending credit, they provided for an environment where I could read and learn and consider questions on my own, thereby coming to my own conclusions with an unpolluted mind. The greatest thing a parent can do for a child.

Sunday School MAY 27, 2012

Just a reminder that we're eagerly after your experiences with cancer– are you or a loved one fighting now? have you lost someone? are you or a loved one a survivor?– for our marathon charity drive later this year. We hope to have a selection of your experiences to read on the air. Our goal in this, as I've said, is to keep the focus on…

Hi Nelson. I belong to a number of educators' groups that highlight social justice issues; they include "Teaching Tolerance," "Teaching for Change," and "Rethinking Schools." Teaching Tolerance shared a link to an article about banned books in Tucson's schools, and it was while reading it that I stumbled across Think Atheist. I don't know how exactly but I think it was referenced in the article or on that page. Anyway I haven't had too much time to read what's hear but I'm interested in what I see so far! Best, Laura
