About Me:
I'm an English professor. I love my job, but I sometimes feel a bit isolated in central Pennsylvania. I grew up in New York City and will always consider myself a New Yorker. I must admit that I envy the sense of community that religious people have (or appear to have).

Here are some things that I like; I've imported these lists from my Facebook page:

Activities: Hiking, rowing, tennis, walking from one end of Manhattan to the other, chess, reading, writing.

Interests: Politics, literature, theater, history, music, artsy stuff.

Favorite Music:
Gogol Bordello
Metric
Beirut
Tilly and the Wall
The National
Feist
Neutral Milk Hotel
The Thermals
Radiohead
Tapes ’n Tapes
Andrew Bird
John Vanderslice
Bishop Allen
Ratatat
Firewater
Arctic Monkeys
We Were Promised Jetpacks

Favorite TV Shows:
The Wire--after 4 nearly perfect seasons, David Simon and Ed Burns jumped the shark last year.
The Daily Show
The Colbert Report
The Office

Favorite Movies:
Blade Runner
Borat
Born into Brothels
Brick
Conventioneers
Dirty, Pretty Things.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Henry Fool
In Bruges
Joyeux Noel
Laurel Canyon
Little Miss Sunshine
Memento
Oldboy (brutal but brilliant)
Page One
Serpico
Sicko
Spellbound
Superbad
Tell No One
The Big Lebowski
The Dark Knight
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
The Edukators
The Graduate
THe Hudsucker Proxy
The Illusionist
The Lives of Others
The Painted Veil
The Princess Bride
The Simpsons
The Usual Suspects
The Village (underrated)
Touching the Void
Unknown White Male

The Godfather is wildly overrated. Other overrated flicks: Atonement, No Country for Old Men.

Favorite Books:
Moby Dick
The Satanic Verses
Pale Fire
Candide

Favorite bookstores (my feeble attempt to help save independent bookshops):

Boston/Cambridge: Raven Used Books, Brattle Book Shop, Commonwealth Books, MIT Press Bookshop

Burlington, VT: North County Books

Chicago: Seminary Co-op (not religious), Powell's, O'Gara & Wilson

Evanston, IL: Amaranth Books

Lincoln, NE: Bluestem Books, A Novel Idea

London: Foyles, in which Unsworths Booksellers is currently housed; London Review Bookshop; Judd Books.

Minneapolis: James & Mary Laurie Bookseller

Montreal: Le Mot / The Word (not religious)

NYC: Book Culture, The Strand (of course), St. Mark's Books, Crawford Doyle Booksellers

Paris: Librarie J. Vrin, Librarie Compagnie, Gibert Jeune, Galignani, The Red Wheelbarrow, Shakespeare and Company.

Portland: Powell's, Daedalus Books

St. Louis: Subterranean Books

San Francisco / Berkeley: University Press Books, Black Oak Books

Washington DC: Bridge Street Books

Best online experience: Maxwell's House of Books--always good.
Why are you here?
To commune with other secular people.
The religion you left
Christian
Why you left your religion.
None of it made any sense to me. I started having serious doubts when I was about eleven.

Hey there,
No need to apologize. Sensitive issues sometimes cause emotions to rear their ugly heads. It happens. I don't think less of you as a person, and once SN cools down, I don't think he will, either... and even if he does? Meh. Fuck him, then. It's an internet forum. We come here to participate as a community, but at the end of the day, it's just fonts on a screen.
Glad to have your participation and hear your opinions over all, but not every post can be perfect. ~shrugs~ Thanks for handling it like an adult after you cooled off, especially considering your circumstance and the level of pain that must have brought up. ~hugs~

Thanks! Don't suppose you've read System of Nature? I've always been meaning to, even if it is somewhat outdated.

I'm afraid I don't have numbers, but from personal experience I can tell you that while not many people in Israel are 'full-blown' atheists, a lot of them are secular (as in - they may believe in God, but do not accpet the reign of organized religion).
It's better than in the States though, where "Atheist" is somewhere below "Scumbag" and above "Murderer", but not by much.

As am I! I see that you are an English professor -- my intended career. Where do you teach?

I haven't seen "The Illusionist" yet, thanks for the clue. But I saw "Prestige" two times (cinema and tv).

Well, here in Switzerland we atheists still have a lot of work to do. :-) For instance, we still have to disestablish. Religion is still teached in public schools. Fees for christian churches are still collected by the state with their taxes.
And there's also a creationist movement, which is maybe(?) growing.

I lived in the US for two years and I have to say I agree with you. However, well, more often than I would like we can do better also...
