About Me:
I'm an atheist, and my family and friends have known this about me for 8 years now. I actively assert that atheism is not a religion (even though you can often pick it as a religion in drop down menus), but rather a general term to describe people who lack a belief in a magical god or higher power. I do my best to lead by example to show those around me that an atheist is not a evil person that should be feared or put down.

Why are you here?
Hoping to find more atheists who don't find anger, pointing fingers, and calling names to be valid forms of communication with theists.
The religion you left
Catholic
Why you left your religion.
I wouldn't call it my religion, more the religion of my family. I no longer follow this religion for a variety of reasons. I struggled with several contradictions early on. I was taught that Catholics were right and everyone else was wrong, and I simply couldn't see this or live this in my relationships with my friends. I also remember getting very angry in the face of open and accepted discrimination (I first understood this on the issues of women's rights and the treatment of children). In college, my eyes were opened and my fears allayed. Once I realized that a lack of belief in god didn't automatically make me a bad person, the transition was easy. Ultimately, I now find that life and love are beautiful. I think that we're all more alike than we realize, and I refuse to find more ways to divide myself from others.

My Dad

Posted on January 27, 2013 at 9:07pm 0 Comments

Today I ran a half marathon.  When I crossed the finish line, I saw my dad running to me.  His arms were wide open and he had the biggest smile on his face.  These are the memories of my dad that I love.  I've run races before and in less time, but he couldn't be there.  I think, for him, having the time to see his kids meeting goals in life is precious and thrilling.  He, of course, calls these moments, "gifts from god," but I don't care what he calls it, so long as he is there and…

What is Atheism Anyway?

Posted on March 31, 2012 at 10:27am 1 Comment

There's a lot of words and ideas that people associate with atheism, and most of us have encountered these opinions at one time or another (directly or indirectly). A while back, I encountered a post on facebook by a priest (well a guy who I dated briefly in high school and is now a priest) that purported to know what atheism is. His post was no doubt a response to some of the more vocal members of the atheist community and it was riddled with anecdotes and fallacies.

He claimed that…
