My take is that evolution has provided us with the sensory apparatus and brains best suited to surviving, as humans, in a world "red in tooth and claw". Our perceptions had to be accurate enough to avoid danger and stay alive long enough to procreate.
Although it would obviously be beneficial to be God-like in our perceptions and be able to see at microscopic and telescopic scales and in all wavelengths -- those abilities aren't necessary to live here in middle Earth.
What is the "true" nature of reality? I'm not sure how much that matters. To me, the main point is that our perception of reality is accurate enough to allow investigation and discovery and lives full of awesome wonder.
