I was raised as an ecumenical Christian. Predominantly Born Again but we attended Catholic church, Lutheran elementary school and Baptist Sunday school. I was Rod Flanders. I knew right from wrong. I knew who was going to Heaven and who was going to Hell. I read Chick Tracts for fuck sake!
I started questioning religion at the age of nine or ten after hearing the story of Abraham and Issac for the first time. I spent the next five years living in absolute terror that my thoughts of god being either cruel or unknowing would condemn me to an eternity of suffering. Fortunately, a new genre of music was emerging. Bands like Venom, Slayer and Destruction were spouting blasphemy on every track. It was my religious defibrillator. It was a cool sea-breeze on a hot and humid day. It helped opened my eyes. I overcame my fear of divine tyranny and became a free-thinking skeptic.
...I guess Tipper Gore was right.
Why are you here?
Religion fascinates me as much as it appalls me. I have an interest in meeting other non-believers, sharing experiences with deconverts and sharing advice with those on the road to deconverting.
