Beth, before you make bold to submit your work to the gang at AbsoluteWrite, you will want to spend a good while poking around there to familiarize yourself with the site and with the procedures and protocols. It's a very big site with a lot of members and quirky nooks and crannies.  There may be a minimum number of posts a member must make before she can submit her work--but I may be wrong.  Anyway, spend some time there; see what you can learn and whom you can befriend.

Beth, you can post whatever work-in-progress or unpublished material you like at a site like this without any concern for copyright protection or first publication.  As a writer and a writing teacher, let me say (I have  mentioned this on the Writers' page), that a much better place for helpful exchange and for general information that you might enjoy having is AbsoluteWrite.com

Oh. How did it turn out?

Oh, I used the egg as a model and carved a block of basswood to look like the egg.
To carve an egg or ball it gives you great experience with the grain and you soon
learn the proper directions your knife has to take to make the cleanest cuts.

I also started with a small basswood block and took an egg out of the fridge and carved it. I did sand it when finished but real carvers don't sand at all.I started with a beginners book and one knife I found at a carving show. Chip Chats shows where and when they are. I mostly learned from magazines, some have "how to" articles. Please search google for chip carving and caricature and relief carving. You will get "hooked" like I am. Its a wonderful art. Beth, it is so nice to know a fellow freethinker and also interested in carving. Wow, that's exciting!

Hi Erich,
I didn't know a lot of women carve. Usually I see a lot of men. I'm not sure I chip carve. Could you describe that? Is it whittling? Do you get Chip Chats magazine? I love to see people's final project in there. Some of those carvings are so beuatiful it's unbelieveable. I'll check out Exchristien.net. I don't carve too much basically because I don't know a whole lot about what I'm doing. I tried to make a round ball. So I started with a square block of bass wood. I whittled down the corners... After a while I couldn't figure out how I continue or if I take over with a sander then. I'd like to take a class just for the fun of it.

ExChristian.net is the right site......... Do you chip carve?

Hi Beth, I just carve for my pleasure...... the challenge to produce something neat. You being an artist would understand....... A lot of ladies carve. I learned a lot from a course at the local technical school....... not expensive. I haven't heard of this fellow but good teaching carvers can be very expensive.
Check out X-Christian.net for some really good writers.
