About Me:
I write Angie the Anti-Theist and manage ExCult Network, a social network for cult survivors like myself.

My grandmother Carol Balizet started the cult Home in Zion Ministries based on her teachings. It was a Bible-based homebirth/faith-healing cult that stressed total withdrawl from the world "systems" (banks, schools, government, religion, entertainment, science, and most of all, medicine.)

At 25, I woke up. At 26, I started speaking up. I'm writing a book about my experiences and about the dangers of unchecked religious freedom when it comes to the health and safety of minors and other reliant on caregivers for their basic needs and provision.

Please support comprehensive national homeschooling education standards, and stand with me in the fight against death-by-prayer.

Bully Culture

Posted on June 20, 2011 at 5:30am 1 Comment

I was homeschooled, then attended Christian school, then went to 2 public elementary schools, 3 public middle schools, 3 public high schools (including 1 magnet school) and finally, GED school. We moved a lot. I had the un-enviable experience of being the New Kid many, many times growing up. In some schools I was bullied, but at others I wasn't.

School culture plays a huge role in the degree of bullying that goes on. Surely some teacher or gym coach at that Iowa elementary school… Continue

The Woman's Role in the Home

Posted on January 27, 2010 at 8:14pm 2 Comments

I've been writing this series over on my blog I've put this passage in it's entirety here, and the links for comments on this post, and follow-up posts in the series, are provided at the end.

Looking at "The Woman's Role in the Home" by Christian homeschooling mother Rachel Harkins makes me want to wash out my eyes with bleach. Or acid.

I enjoy coming up with acrostics…

Curing the Gay

>What the hades, Uganda? You've determined that homosexuality is a psychological problem and that people can choose not to be gay if they work really hard at it. Where in the frilly heck did you get that idea?

Damn. Go Rachel for "..if you believe the debunked unscientific claptrap they're selling." I'm so tired of the fake balance we so often see in news (like having Christians on to discuss what… Continue

I'm looking for a female singer to lay down some vocals in the studio. Check out this link for more info and a video.

Some of my lyrics criticize religion - WOOT!  :-)

If you don't sing, but know someone that does, would you forward them the link?

Love your videos. What do you do for work? Do you know other atheists in your neck of the woods?

Are you the gal that was on the news? Cheers to you! My husband and I saw that and thought you were being very responsible. It was incredibly irritating to hear that woman say she felt sorry for you! Why, because you're being intelligent and trying to share with other women struggling with their guilt/shame over getting an abortion that it's not something to feel guilt/shame over? I got all kinds of riled up. I also feel they tossed in your atheism just to show that, "Yup, godless people kill babies," instead of putting it into a more realistic perspective. So frustrating. Anyway, good for you!

I saw you on the front page of the Huffington Post! I just wanted to let you know that you are incredibly brave for standing up to the people who criticized your decision. It seems that many of the people who are criticizing you didn't listen to what you had to say about why you had the abortion and instead just attacked you for having an abortion. It's amazing to me that so many people can be against something that is completely legal.
