Your Religious Status
About Me:
There's not much to say about me. I'm pretty uninteresting. I have five cats that my life revolves around. I'm quiet and tend to prefer to listen to what others have to say, but I love to talk philosophy and books when I'm feeling brave. Much as I believe religious indoctrination is child abuse and I despise hypocritical Christians, I don't like the new breed of in-your-face, unpleasant Atheists. In-your-face, unpleasant religious zealots are bad enough, and I prefer civil discourse and nice people.
Why are you here?
I decided to sign up for the site because the idea of an online community of atheists is very appealing to me, given that I know only a handful of atheists personally. I'm all for discussion and debate, but sometimes it's nice to find someone to talk to who won't bring "God" into to discussion or if they do, it won't be from a blind belief standpoint.
The religion you left
Why you left your religion.
I was raised as a Christian by two very messed up parents in a very messed up church (The Worldwide Church of God) and if ever in my life I identified myself as a Christian, it was out of fear, or a lie to avoid confrontation. I believe that fear will always be in the back of my mind, and realizing that, as well as my anger at Christians for being the world's biggest pack of hypocrites, has made me the atheist I am today.

Welcome to the community! I think that for the most part we are not the "in your face" kind of Atheists. At the same time, we tend not to subscribe to the "Everyone's beliefs deserve respect" philosophy either. People deserve a level of base respect, but ideas do not. When and how to deal with absurd idiologies and warped logic is what makes the difference between a "friendly Atheist" and and one of those "in-your-face" types. It's a delicate game trying to get someone to think without making them upset. Subtle is key.

Welcome aboard!
