Evolution at it's finest!

Leaf bug!

But, responding to the other posters here, no I don't think a creationist would be at all speechless when confronted with this bug, nor do I think they would concede it looks anything like evolution. They would say such an intricately designed bug could never have evolved, but must have been made by the great Artist, because how could random chance ever make a bug that looks like a leaf?

From a more rational perspective though, yeah. Evolution is really somethin.

@Steve - I don't remember which book of Dawkins (Selfish Gene, Extended Phenotype, River out of Eden, etc.) it was that I first read this concept, but having done so...my mind was sufficiently blown.  I know he's vilified by the religious for his atheism, but what so many people fail to understand is that he is first and foremost an evolutionary biologist, and a damn good one too.

Reminds me of one of my favorite sci-fi movies: Mimic.

The same evolutionary forces that created that bug, peregrine falcons, cheetahs, and geckos also created this...

When I was a wee child, lampreys came up the St. Lawrence seaway and invaded the great lakes, the mere thought of them attaching themselves to us was enough to keep us from swimming in lake Ontario, yech!

That lamprey is a far closer relative of ours than that leaf insect.  Actually it reminds me of some lawyers and politicians I know so apparently the relationship is closer than I realized.

Isn't it just beautiful. Even down to the brown edges of a leaf. Nature is truly amazing. I wonder what the underside looks Like?

*shudders* damn I hate bugs. Have no idea why, but I hate them. That thing would get smashed the second it moved.

If it poses no threat why feel motivated to destroy it?
