I think it such a shame, from the land of the brave, that one can't say what one actually thinks on what is supposed to be one of the best sites of it's kind - an Atheist site - without being censored by M.D. Moderator Dan or anybody else for that matter. I thought one of the joys of this site is the diversity of comments.

I, for one, want to know what other people think - it is good for my education to know what other people think - the diverse subjects on this site is it's strength - the only thing any of us have in common - there is no god - other than that, many disagreements, and it is all good in the end, even with people apologising to each other. That is what grown ups do, and it is all good.

I've run into this anal "stay on topic" thing on other boards (not atheist boards). It doesn't recognize that conversations are organic things and not computer programs. I feel we should be treated like people kibitzing over coffee or beers not like kids whose knuckles get rapped whenever we get a little playful by an overbearing nun.

I do realize that there is a problem if the topic starts out about the causes of rape and all of a sudden it's about "Do you think the Celtics will do well this year" with no organic transitions.

@Judith van der Rooss

Alan black, have you considered going into the priesthood or a career on Faux Fox News, perhaps politics in America. What is your view on all those prison rapes Alan, do you think they happen because orange jump overalls make the butts of male inmates just look soooooooooo sexy - doubtless the inmates only have the,selves to blame there as well ?

I agree. A rapist is a rapist because s/he is a rapist, not because of his/her sex.

The mods received a complaint. They (Dan) shared that fact.  As far as I know, that's all they've done.  The thread isn't locked, and our freedom to say what we want hasn't been curtailed any more than it was prior to the complaint.  I'm dealing with Dan's post as a piece of information delivery. Somewhere, someone was annoyed.  Am I concerned? Guess.

To the person or persons making the complaint, however, I would remind them that Atheism is the denial of a 'higher authority' having control of what we do or say.  The formalisation of a complaint to moderators is an example of asking a 'higher authority' to step in and take control over something that you do not like.  This dichotomy may be what has led to the evident antipathy here to such action.  If you are not at ease with communicating on a forum freely, don't.  It isn't hard, just stop following the thread.

The role of the mods is to prevent abuse of the forums, not to direct the flow of communication.  The role of the individual poster is to communicate and seek other opinions.  If you are easily offended, may I suggest the adult solution?

Actually, Strega, I can see how you might think that, being unaware that comments by Moderator Dan and both myself and Unseen (who, for a change, were NOT arguing) were deleted last night, leaving you with the impression that nothing happened.

Comment by Strega on November 6, 2012 at 11:16am

Then I'm disappointed.  Were you interesting?  I know you and Unseen take contradictory positions frequently, but I wholly support your protesting to retain the freedom to contradict.

Strega - I'll email you the whole story after lunch, complete with posts I saved, something he can't delete. Sorry to make you wait, but I'm having lunch with someone. Goodness, that was off-topic, wasn't it?

Comment by archaeopteryx on November 6, 2012 at 11:25am

Unseen - it had nothing (imo) to do with being off-topic, despite what the email I sent you said, if a moderator went through each of thes threads and deleted every off-topic comment, there'd be little left.

It had to do with being called Moderator Dan. Is his name Dan? His avatar says so. Is he a Moderator, his post said so. Is the term Moderator Dan inaccurate? Not according to Moderator Dan. If he had been a Fireman named Bob, would I have been wrong to have called him Fireman Bob?

Seems like a good topic for a new discussion --
